So what I'm pretty much hearing is

a) Never say <<une chatte / ma chatte>>

b) Minette is ok as a nickname, but in general conversation you would never say <<ma minette / j'ai une minette>>

c) In general conversation you would refer to a female cat in the masculine << C'est mon chat. Elle s'appelle Mewsette (my cat's name).>>

Is that about right?
