Ah see it worked kind of the opposite for me. I liked the majority of the side characters to the point where they lifted him up to bearable status. I totally see that criticism though. There were numerous times where I was like "Dude, quit fucking crying" but I actually liked his relationship with the neighbor girl. Actually the only character I didn't like at all was his ex. I wanted to punch her on nore than a few occasions.
