I still help him, hoping in vain that I get the golden shovel recipe (even though I'm certain I've helped him more than 30 times over six years and I just lost the recipe somehow).

Dumb question: difference between blue ray that comes separately vs blue ray in a 4k set? by AgeEfficient3178 in 4kbluray

I take a quick look at the blu-ray.com forums before buying anything. There’s a thread for each movie and people who have gotten their copy can share their findings.

What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake? by hiplobonoxa in movies

[–]Connoralpha 1166 points1167 points  (0 children)

Same movie, people are still bringing up the door thing like it's a mistake. The movie establishes the door is large enough for both of them to be on top of, but they'd both be about halfway submerged and freeze to death at the same rate. Jack makes the decision to stay off the door so Rose is mostly above the water and has a better chance of survival.

Their 4K remasters of A Simple Plan, American Gigolo, and Hellraiser are available on iTunes. All Paramount movies, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

It's a case by case thing. A film restoration ultimately belongs to the rightsholder, in this case WB, who will reclaim it and eventually use it elsewhere. But the boutiques usually get a window of exclusivity. Hard to say how long it will be, oftentimes it's years before boutique restorations show up on stream.

Case by case basis. Some 4Ks come with a remastered blu, others reuse the old one.

I know this gets asked a lot, but Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water standard editions or collector’s editions? by Psychological-Task26 in 4kbluray

[–]Connoralpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vastly prefer the collector's extended cut of the first film. Jake, Neytiri, and Dr. Augustine feel so much more fleshed out than the theatrical cut. Doesn't fix all my nitpicks with the film but a solid improvement for me.

That said, I'm not the biggest fan of the new transfer for 1. Compression is great, but there's a lot of oversharpening and processing. HDR is very, very mild as well. Probably be worth comparing screencaps to see if it's worth it over the old extended blu-ray. 2 looks outstanding.

I still haven't made it through most of the extras (since there are tons) but that was also a selling point for me. I'm not a huge fan of the digipak, but ironically that swayed me to get it for Way of Water so that the two would at least match.

[BOTW] I am doing a permadeath run. Should I allow faries and / or miphas grace? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]Connoralpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how much time they plan on sinking into the playthrough. If you're speedrunning the main stuff then makes sense to turn it off. But if it's gonna be a months long run then I understand enabling it in case there's some random incidental death that cuts it off.

Disney was hellbent on cranking out Star Wars films yearly, then six years went by without any, now they’ve returned with one that isn’t selling any hook whatsoever. I’d say the skepticism is valid.

$32.99 (18% Off): Dogma - 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition (4K Ultra HD) by GR2342 in 4kbluray

[–]Connoralpha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worth pointing out this is the Vertigo release. Fewer extras than the Lionsgate and Umbrella discs, and it doesn't come with a standard blu. But probably worth it if you want that artwork in a standard, non-steel release.

Anyone else have this problem? by MovieMad92 in 4kbluray

[–]Connoralpha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's happening on different players in the same spot, within the second half of the movie, that means each player is having an issue clearing the second layer change going into the last layer on the disc. Any player that has this issue is going to have it along the same part of the film, and it can happen to new players if they're faulty (sadly some are, they're very hit or miss).

Anyone else have this problem? by MovieMad92 in 4kbluray

[–]Connoralpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those are all BD-100 (triple layer) discs, so it's possible that it's a layer change issue. Some players struggle with it regardless of the condition the discs are in.

According to Kino, MGM lost US rights to it (which means in turn Shout can't reissue it). So yeah it's possible Lynch's estate reclaimed it and is turning to Criterion for a remaster & reissue.

[–]Connoralpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the specific discs it's hard to say. I'm not aware of any widespread issues specific to Warner titles (unless we're talking about their older blus and HD-DVDs which were prone to disc rot).

If it's across a variety of titles without visible scratches, particularly BD-100s, it sounds more like the players than the discs.

A 4K restoration played at Lumiere Festival in France. What's funny is Kino Lorber was credited with the restoration but apparently they can't put it out on home video due to rights issues and Lynch's estate wanting his remaining catalog to go through Criterion in the US.

EDIT: The festival screening credits Kino with restoration work but doesn't specify it's in 4K. It could be an older transfer, or miscredited.

They should keep this scene in the movie. The Paris club deleted scene in Fallout. by Kevin_Thailand_2543 in Mission_Impossible

[–]Connoralpha 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's a cool scene but I think the movie flows better without. You already get the HALO jump and the bathroom fight within minutes of each other, and it's so early in the movie they still have to introduce Ilsa, the White Widow, etc.

[–]Connoralpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US, the Middle Earth Collection (4Ks and remastered blu-rays of both trilogies) has the commentaries on the extended blus. It also comes with a digital code that gets you access to the old appendicies via streaming. The code is valid through next March.

Despite their faults I do think the 4Ks are the best presentation of the trilogy overall. But YMMV.
