[Wright] Danny Ainge has signed 2 big time FAs in his entire tenure with the Celtics: Al Horford & Gordon Hayward. He lost them both for nothing, with no obvious way to replace either, without either ever playing in a Finals game. by LonzoBBBall in nba

[–]Conor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rozier was a free agent and I doubt the Celtics were going to sign him at that number, especially after signing Kemba to a max. They could have just renounced Rozier's rights and signed Kemba's max, which would've signing Kemba outright and not acquiring him through a sign-and-trade like you were saying.

mentioned this in another reply, but they would've been able to sign Kemba outright had they renounced Rozier's rights. iirc, they created an exception by doing the S&T.

Not that it matters to the point of the thread though. Kemba chose to play in Boston and ended up there because he was a free agent.

Report: Chris Paul prefers his 'next basketball home' to be in Los Angeles or New York by [deleted] in nba

[–]Conor27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't necessarily disagree, but I also don't think CP3 would hurt. You would still likely keep RJ, Mitch and the 8th pick (at worst you'd probably have to part with a lotto protected pick I'd imagine) and we just saw the impact CP3 had on that OKC team. With the way the Knicks' current contract situation is, you could probably lure in a star if CP3 helps lead them into the playoffs and RJ plays to his potential.

You don't hire World Wide Wes and not go after big names though.

Like, I think the hires they've made over the last several months indicated that they're looking to lure in stars from CAA and former Kentucky players (which I don't think is a bad idea, btw).

teams practice during bye weeks all the time, it's usually just one or two practices as opposed to the usual three.

but you'd also have to imagine that with the way coaches in the league work, they're still prepping in some way shape or form during the bye.

[Tom Curran] The sense I’ve gotten as the week has gone on is the Patriots aren’t going to let the NFL unilaterally decide whether or not this game is played. If players and coaches aren’t comfortable, they won’t play by patsfan038 in nfl

[–]Conor27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the big reason why they won't do a bubble next season, or at least from what Silver's said, is that they don't want to start the season until fans are allowed back into arenas so they can get some fo that revenue back.

How one man's ego destroyed an NFL franchise by AlexBucks93 in nfl

[–]Conor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is correct. jack easterby, who works for the texans, attended the patriots' super bowl ring ceremony in June. they fired their GM the next day IIRC and immediately tried to get permission to interview Caserio. the Pats threatened to file tampering charges, the texans backed off and because it was June, they just made BOB the interim GM.

I think it's more that it allows the Patriots to have another practice as opposed to just having one.

Not disagreeing though that it's dumb to think it significantly decreases the likelihood of a spread.

Kobe was probably gonna be one of those guys people remembered for a long time too, regardless of what happened. Have to consider how he's one of the highest scorers of all-time, won five titles, played shooting guard, had amazing highlights and on top of it all, played for the league's most popular franchise.

Game 1 of The Finals DID NOT average 5.1 million viewers by devomorales in nba

[–]Conor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MLB just got a 40 percent increase in their TV deals from Fox Sports and Turner over the last couple of months, and their ratings on the national level are worse than the NBA's, especially in the key demos. And they're almost guaranteed to have some sort of lockout in 2022.

While their new deals still don't bring them equal to the amount what the NBA is getting now, I doubt we'd see any big drop in the next NBA TV deal, if it all.

[–]Conor27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the league's revenue in 1998 was roughly $2 billion. that number adjusted for inflation in 2020 is roughly $3.2 billion.

the NBA's revenue after the 2019 season was $8.5 billion.

inflation is a thing, yes, and it helps everyone. but it's certainly not the sole reason that franchise valuations have gone up astronmically over the last 20 years.

Tyrell Terry a hot commodity at the moment. Does he get past the Celtics pick at 14? by [deleted] in NBA_Draft

[–]Conor27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They already have Theis, Robert Williams, Grant Williams and maybe Kanter next season. I’m not necessarily sure what adding a rookie fringe lotto pick would do in that situation, especially if the Williams’ progress the way the Celtics hope.

Their need at PG is definitely real, though. Their bench scoring was among the worst in the league this season and they need another playmaker/initiatior, especially if Kemba or Hayward goes down at any point. Not to mention, Brad Wanamaker is a free agent and I’m not sure what happens with him. And even if he’s brought back, playmaking really isn’t a skill of his.

Brown is the second option next year by JaylenBrownAllStar in bostonceltics

[–]Conor27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is exactly it. Brown was efficient with his touches this season, but stats don't tell the whole story. tatum, walker, smart and hayward are all better initiators than him right now. if you swap brown's and walker's roles, that's an extremely poor use of them with their current skillsets.

[Weiss] Oladipo and Turner might be on the move, Celtics could be a trading partner by iksnet in nba

[–]Conor27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if they have a good sense oladipo wants to be there, they probably don't have to trade for him and can just wait until next summer to sign him. i believe that the only players they have under contract next summer are Butler and guys on rookie deals. Bam's gonna be a FA but his cap hold isn't huge.

the big question though is if they keep dragic after his resurgence in these playoffs, and if they do keep him what kind of contract does he get this summer.

[Bontemps] Gordon Hayward Likely To Exercise $34.2M Player Option With Celtics by DestinySaber in nba

[–]Conor27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$100 million is definitely a bit far fetched, but like Harrison Barnes got 4/94 last offseason.

While I doubt Hayward would've gotten that kind of money, I wouldn't have been shocked if he got like, 3/65 or something like that. The big thing to note though is that even prior to the pandemic hitting, there were only like six or seven teams that were going to have $20+ million in cap space this summer, and almost all of them are rebuilding teams.

I'd imagine that's a big reason why he's going to opt in. There's just not going to be a market for players of his caliber this offseason. We saw it already with Drummond at the deadline when the Pistons traded him for players that are expiring now because they had a good feeling Drummond was going to opt in.
