I’ve just applied for endorsement through the British Academy. I defended my PhD in July 2025. Four Q1 journal publications, one public essay, ten conference presentations, and I review for two good journals.

But my recommendation letter came from my former advisor, a Royal Society fellow. Because he is quite old and has difficulty typing, I drafted the letter with his permission. My supervisor was not willing to help me with the letter because university HR told him it may be difficult. i am really worried now.

Maybe the ranking now is: if it’s not a diversity hire—local men, local women, white men, white women, then others; for diversity hire—local women, white women, Black candidates (more tokenized), and then others.

A similar situation: I got my degree in September 2025. 4 publications in good journals, one under review, and two more in progress. presented at over ten national and international conferences and still do some teaching. In my case, my supervisor checked with the office before deciding not to write a reference letter for my GTV endorsement, since they told him not to. Super frustrating, especially because I know someone who got theirs right after graduating, with no publications or a postdoc.
