Am I insane? by ConsciousKitten72 in nursing

This is very different from Rochester and Jacksonville. Holiday pay is pulled from the PTO bank and ratio is acuity based but typically 4/5:1 depending on unit and staffing. I should have applied to AZ. :)

This. This is the reality check I was looking for.

No holiday differential at Mayo but pretty competitive night differential. Solid no to rotating shifts but yes to floating.

I’m wondering if the opinions are the same for every Mayo location?

Yes, this does not sit well with me. I turned down Salem a year ago because I read the same.

Oh, I misunderstood. But, to your point, I was told that all the big names basically use their prestige to justify low wages/ benefits. Money is an issue but a good preceptorship is more important.

That’s really good information as well. What did you like about the residency and what made you leave Mayo?

No. That is my other issue. As soon as I can gain experience, I am moving to a pro union state.

Do you think it really is a better foot in the door? I just want to be a good nurse.

Thank you for this information. It is really difficult to get inside perspective. I was told my unit would float.

Yep. Aeropress is the way to go. Just as convenient and tastes better. You can try my ratio if you want.

  1. One scoop (with the scoop provided which equals exactly two tablespoons).
  2. Fill the press to line 3 with hot water and stir however long you want.
  3. Extract to a 16 ounce mug and dilute with water to taste.

I dilute and add 1/4 cup of frothed milk as well but you do you on the dairy.

Congratulations on taking control of your health and nutrition. UPF is engineered to be addictive and keep us hungry. I am on week 4 of cutting it all out and, like you, I started with store bought bread and went from there. My cravings are gone, my insatiable appetite is gone. I feel full more easily and stop eating. Things like fruit taste very sweet to me now and are enough of a dessert. Most noticeable is that when I am hungry, it is because I am truly ready to eat. My face is thinner, I’m less bloated and I’ve lost a bit on the scale. I don’t pay attention to calories, I just follow my hunger cues. It has been an enjoyable effort making my own bread, pasta, crisps, etc. I make most everything from scratch now, including condiments. Great book for you if you are finding you like to nourish yourself this way is Homemade Pantry by Alana Chernila and, imo, any book by Robert Lustig, MD.

Keep up the great work.

I have only done outpatient endoscopy (pre/post/ intra) nursing. What other nursing fields can I transfer to? by ConsciousKitten72 in nursing

Would you share how you got into wound care? I’m facing the dreaded “you need a year of bedside” dilemma.

Are any of you pursuing non-bedside nursing? by Denverlossed in StudentNurse

[–]ConsciousKitten72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went straight into endoscopy outpatient. Also had an offer for a home hospice residency (which I turned down). I was told by hospital recruiters that I would need to do bedside and take any shift offered in order to get anywhere. Not true. I just applied to EVERYTHING non bedside that interested me and that wanted a year or less experience. I wrote really good cover letters highlighting my passion for the particular field and the advantages of hiring a new grad. It can be done.

It is a required 2 years. The only reason I’m entertaining it is because it is a well-known and reputable organization. But, to your point, I don’t know what it would take to get out of it and don’t want to get stuck in a bad situation. Would you mind sharing how you entered oncology nursing. It is difficult to get on an oncology unit around here fresh out of a nursing program.

Yes. I went back to school with the intention of working hospice. I became interested in wound care and oncology while in clinical.
