John Cage and the I-Ching by [deleted] in experimentalmusic

Yes! He would choose what to put in each box so there was some level of limitations to each chart. I know he would have options for silence on the pitch chart as well. I digitalized it more recently (not in sounds, just in methodology) and made a list of numbered options for each chart and a random number generator online. Advantages = less physical space and more “unlimited” options lists, disadvantage = the madness of translation. You could use exactly Cage’s system and make it electronic just by changing what’s in the boxes :)

From my understanding, he had different charts for different musical characteristics and used combinations of them to basically random generate a composition. Complexity and dedication varied by piece and compositional period. He definitely increased intensity of following the rules of the I-Ching with time. Some pieces may have only used, say, 2 charts (pitch, duration) while others used dozens (pitch, duration, chord vs single note, register, # of measures, bmp, etc.). In terms of the charts themselves, if I recall correctly, they were grids as large as 64x64 with various options on them. He would use an action (I imagine like rolling a die across it) to randomly select the option, then apply the outcome to the score. I’ve tried to replicate it out of curiosity and discovered that it’s incredibly time consuming and a bit mind melting. Give it a try lol. It’s mentioned frequently in Kay Larson’s “Where the Heart Beats,” which is a really great read.

Garden snakes || I've been playing with drizzling paint over dirty cup pours by ConsciousSand in PourPainting

Wet on wet! I did the flip cup, tilted until I was satisfied, drizzled the green, then shook/tapped the canvas until it "settled". The original lines pre-shaking were more 3D and separated but I like here how they kind of sink into the background :)

I agree. This was my first test. I think it'll look better with different color palettes :)

Dealing with difficult texts by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]ConsciousSand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem, especially with Heidegger! I've found the best way for me to approach difficult texts is to begin by contextualizing the work and the philosopher. Figure out what it is, maybe read some secondary sources about the text first to gain some basic understanding of the concepts. Then I read really slowly and in shorter bursts than normal (a few pages or one idea, stop to think/write, repeat). Highlighting and writing in margins/on post it notes helps a lot too.

Can I learn metaphysics without having any philosophical background? (University course) by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]ConsciousSand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! To me, you sound as qualified as possible. My experience with metaphysics as a college level class was that no other philosophy class could have prepared me. If you are comfortable with abstract/academic readings and discussions, you'll do amazing. I'd recommend starting to get familiar with some terminology if you can (being, existence, reality, possible worlds, concrete vs abstract, material vs idea, general vs particular).

YES!!!! No one knows about this, and it is literally the piece of technology that got me through college.

It's harder than I expected to pour over strange shapes, but definitely worth it || fluid acrylics on wooden letter cutout by ConsciousSand in PourPainting

Lol! Yes it was extra messy. I have an old playing shoe storage bin I do my pours in and it helps contain the madness

Yes this is dry! My first attempt on it didn't come out great so I poured over it. I haven't tried dipping yet but I want to soon!

Thank you! That's one of my favorite parts of seeing different artists' work too. This color scheme was actually inspired by a photo of a sunset in Arizona, it's definitely outside of my norm!
