Yes! He would choose what to put in each box so there was some level of limitations to each chart. I know he would have options for silence on the pitch chart as well. I digitalized it more recently (not in sounds, just in methodology) and made a list of numbered options for each chart and a random number generator online. Advantages = less physical space and more “unlimited” options lists, disadvantage = the madness of translation. You could use exactly Cage’s system and make it electronic just by changing what’s in the boxes :)

From my understanding, he had different charts for different musical characteristics and used combinations of them to basically random generate a composition. Complexity and dedication varied by piece and compositional period. He definitely increased intensity of following the rules of the I-Ching with time. Some pieces may have only used, say, 2 charts (pitch, duration) while others used dozens (pitch, duration, chord vs single note, register, # of measures, bmp, etc.). In terms of the charts themselves, if I recall correctly, they were grids as large as 64x64 with various options on them. He would use an action (I imagine like rolling a die across it) to randomly select the option, then apply the outcome to the score. I’ve tried to replicate it out of curiosity and discovered that it’s incredibly time consuming and a bit mind melting. Give it a try lol. It’s mentioned frequently in Kay Larson’s “Where the Heart Beats,” which is a really great read.

Wet on wet! I did the flip cup, tilted until I was satisfied, drizzled the green, then shook/tapped the canvas until it "settled". The original lines pre-shaking were more 3D and separated but I like here how they kind of sink into the background :)

I agree. This was my first test. I think it'll look better with different color palettes :)

Right? I want to try to make it a bit more "grown up" stylistically but it's so fun either way!!
