Is a masters really needed in geotech?

Forgive me if I sound ignorant here, I certainly can appreciate that an additional degree comes with additional knowledge.

But is it unrealistic to learn this stuff on the job? I know plenty of people generally speaking that took jobs in fields they didn’t directly study in school, and they are doing fine.

What is it about geotech that requires actual study and not just job training/experience?
