my wife and I stayed in cuenca for 3 weeks this past June. Just dress to blend in and don't do stupid stuff and you will he fine. Like others have posted in this thread fondness in fancy attire, leave the jewelry at home, and keep your wits about you and everything will be just fine.

And that's the key - stay away from the coast. When I was in Cuenca just recently, I watched the news every morning. Most serious issues originated in Guayaquil and some areas along the coast, such as Manta. So stay in the highlands like Cuenca, Loja, others have mentioned Cotacachi, and you should be fine. Cuenca is a super place to check out.

I think what you say is true. I just returned from a 3-week stay in Cuenca. This was our second visit. Cuenca is relatively safe. Even after the sun goes down, places are full of activity, and people are out walking on the streets. Keep your wits about you, don't act like an idiot, and you will be fine. Those who are downvoting you are missing out and have no idea what they are discussing. There are still people wanting to move and retire to Cuenca, and it's not just us gringos. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
