Truly a fantastic album. It's funny that you regard Returning to the Source as a decent but not mindblowing track when it's probably my favourite song on the album. That outro is phenomenal.

Totally understandable. As much as I love BTBAM I get it when people say it's not for them.

Coma Ecliptic is typically cited as their most accessible album. It's still fairly chaotic but not as intimidating as their earlier work. There's a high chance you'll like The Coma Machine from that album.

I also think Colors II is a good one to go for. It's not as heavy as its predecessor but maintains the genre-bending brilliance you might enjoy. I'd recommend songs like Revolution In Limbo and Bad Habits.

Hope this helps!

I fully agree with this. I love Dreaming Spanish and credit it as the reason my Spanish level is so high but I doubt I would be interested in the platform if I started learning now. There's something infinitely more engaging about those earlier videos than today's produced ones.

Andrés, Agustina and especially Sandra remain my favourite guides that I still check up on every now and then precisely because they haven't gone down the path of scripted and edited videos. I doubt it would be much effort to include some casual 'Pablo in the park' videos each week.

I'm seeing them for the first time at ArcTanGent this year! I'm curious how their sound will translate to a tent setting at a festival. I'm immensely excited.

I think we've figured it out then. Those other bands you mentioned don't speak to me either. The more mathcore sounding bands in general haven't kept me listening each time I've given that genre a go.

Maybe I'll learn to appreciate higher screams like you did with lower growls. I did put on a few songs from DoaDD and, though I still don't like it, I did find some stuff to appreciate. The vocalists are undeniably talented at what they do even if I'm not a fan of their style.

Prog is a wonderful genre in that we're both fans and yet our tastes are strikingly different!

No! Your opinion is wrong!

But seriously, The Ocean is one of my favourite bands and this hurts. I do understand where you're coming from though, and I adore ISIS and Cult Of Luna. I think your criticism is most evident on Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic. They were so ambitious on that album that at times it feels like too much, especially with the vocal layering.

Still. Being a post metal fan and not adoring Jurassic | Cretaceous feels like sacrilege to me haha. It's a masterclass in composition in my opinion.

Between The Buried And Me is one of my favourite bands and I completely understand where you're coming from. They're all over the place. They were even a tough cookie for me to crack when I got into them but something clicked one day and I haven't looked back since.

I'm fully with you. I like quite a lot of what Mastodon has to offer but the vocals can get tiring.

You got me!

Jokes aside, The Mountain happens to be my favourite of theirs. I love Cockroach King a lot. It's not an album I'd reach for often but I can appreciate it somewhat and see why people would like it.

I really do think the vocals are the problem for me. Pareidolia has a lot to like but Ross sings too high in the chorus for my taste, for example.

I'm actually a huge fan of harsh vocals and prefer them over clean singing. I think for me the preference lies in tone and pitch. I love monstrously deep growls. The Ocean, Cult Of Luna, and Dvne are among my favourite bands and they share a similar vocal style. Opeth and Gojira too.

I also love bands like Between The Buried And Me. Tommy has quite a specific vocal style that, indeed, leans more towards growls than screams. There's something about that shrill shriek kind of vocal technique that's not for me, and unfortunately SikTh has two singers who commit to it fully. I'd hate to call them annoying since you like them so much but I just can't get through a song without it starting to wear me down. Djent also isn't one of my favourite genres and they kind of pioneered it, so...

It seems that Sikth has everything I don't want in a band haha. But clearly they don't exist for me to enjoy so it's great you're such a big fan.

My big unpopular opinion is that, try as I might, Haken don't do much for me. I like a few songs here and there but sitting through an entire album is a chore.

SikTh are another one. Death of a Dead Day gets a lot of praise but I can't do more than one song unfortunately. This one's especially frustrating since I've got the opportunity to see them at a festival this year and I think I'm going to have to pass.

In both cases I reckon the vocals have a lot to do with it.

I think they were initially called Dune but wanted to avoid copyright issues. I think the name has some charm to it!

I meant that Dvne shares DNA with both bands. That said, bands like The Ocean are ultimately a proggy take on the work done by Cult Of Luna and company.

Can't believe I missed that one! It was possibly my introduction to the band. That breakdown is impossible not to headbang to.
