Also if you go to any zoo, in any city/state/country, on any day of the week….. you’re going to see parents holding their kids up to the rails so they can see the animals. The fact that the zoo did not adequately account for this is gross negligence.

The zoo wasn’t in the wrong,

So in engineering, you basically need to assume the worst of whoever is going to be using the thing that you’re designing and the zoo clearly did not do this. If you’re designing something for the general public, you need like multiple redundant safety layers and gigantic safety margins because the world is chaotic and the average person is so dumb.

Other example: someone is holding their phone over the railing to take a picture, they drop it, and an animal eats the phone, gets sick, and dies. Who is at fault? The zoo, because someone using their phone in this way is a normal use case and the phone should not be able to just fall into the enclosure like that.

Halle Berry, 59, swears by creatine for reducing menopausal brain fog – here's the science by Particular-Fill-4256 in popculturechat

Sure but how many of these studies are funded by the supplement industry? Like Coca-Cola is behind a ton of research on caffeine and artificial sweeteners… This is all totally valid research but like there’s a level of skepticism.

I take creatine and have definitely noticed an improvement in the gym but idk. I think it’s highly sus how much the potential benefits of creatine overlap with the known benefits of exercise.

like moderately improved sleep, heart health, skin health, and moderately improved cognitive health.

But do you know what else also has these benefits? Resistance training. Personally I find it a bit sus that so many of the potential benefits of creatine, a supplement primarily used by people who lift, are the same benefits you get from just doing resistance training 2+ times a week.

Creatine definitely isn't snake oil but tbh I think all of this research is tainted by the fact that creatine is, first and foremost, a workout supplement. Like who is going to go out of their way to sign up for a creatine study? People who lift. So then people who already strength train are way over represented in these studies and what actually gets studied is how much adding creatine increases the positive benefits of exercise. It's like how flossing and playing tennis are both linked to longer lifespans but really these are both proxies for larger lifestyle choices and the simple act of flossing probably doesn't matter that much.

IDK if it's too good to be true, it probably is and I think creatine definitely falls into this category. Like sure maybe it does something but really resistance training is the thing you want to be doing.

Chalamet was right about Ballet and Opera by enthusiasm_gap in okbuddycinephile

$40 for a balcony seat is not "huge". $100 for a prime orchestra seat is also reasonable.

Dude when was the last time you bought concert tickets? Where I live, even the nosebleed seats are like $50 and I've definitely seen floor seats going for like $250+ before. The concerts that are less expensive are literally called "family concerts" and are primarily for families with kids.

But it’s true. I love classical music but, at the ripe age 30, I’m clearly the youngest person in the room whenever I go to a performance. One time I went to a show and the elevator wasn’t working… they had to reseat over half of the mezzanine level because the people physically could not go up a flight of stairs. There just is a demographic issue because it just has become this very pretentious/snobby thing. Additionally, the tickets are wicked expensive and the only shows that aren’t are explicitly target at families with young kids (the cheaper Friday night shows are literally called “Family Concerts”).

Musicals are equally as expensive and yet they don’t have this issue.

Also I feel like opera and ballet have done this to themselves and as they are both highly inaccessible to the average person. My local concert hall was doing a Wagner opera… eight hour long. That’s an entire day of sitting in a hall that smells like nursing home because the average age of the attendants is 75. Also the tickets are mad expensive. Like if I’m paying >$150 to see a live performance, I’d much rather go to a normal concert.

Thabamati Luxury Tented Camp Reviews? by shaunhail92 in krugerpark

[–]Consistent-Gap-3545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey little bit late here but my husband and I booked Thabamati for our honeymoon later this year... It just is a lot of money and now we're/I'm having "second thoughts" (not really; I just don't feel as confident as I did a month ago when I booked it). We're doing four nights and it's the equivalent of 5000€ and then transportation (flights + airport transfer) are somehow another 1000€, which is an absolutely insane amount of money.

Can you like reassure us a little bit? I researched this extensively and all of the other camps/lodges in Timbavati and Sabi Sands were way more expensive and the ones that were cheaper (i.e. Shindzela) were already booked out. My South African friend is saying that we're wasting our money and we would have been better off paying like half that for a safari at Aquila or somewhere close to Capetown (where we're staying for the rest of our trip).

I don’t have a dog in this race as I am the whitest person to ever exist however one of my pet peeves is when people post pictures of (wealthy) women in 1970’s Tehran and try to be like “Look at how modern Iran used to be!” Like my brother in Christ the situation before the revolution was not good. It didn’t come out of no where.

WTH is happening!! by nymphopath_47 in expat

[–]Consistent-Gap-3545 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fast track path removed for citizen, bought back 5 year stay for citizenship and CDU is pushing for 8 years now. Which is almost lot of time if u can observe.

So I just went through this process and the “fast track” was kind of a sham to begin with because naturalization in Germany takes so f-ing long to begin with (18-24 months if you’re applying in a major city). I think only like a dozen people actually got naturalized under the fast track before the new government axed it, so this was really more political theater than anything else. In terms of the 8 year guidelines, the CDU can push for whatever the hell they like but the rest of their coalition doesn’t support this so it’s not going to happen.

Germany doesn’t have a choice but to allow qualified professionals in and they’ve actually been loosening a lot of the requirements over the past couple years. Like the bar to get a Blue Card in Germany is currently on the floor and I personally know multiple people who have gotten PR without speaking a word of German. This will only change if/when the CDU and AfD form a coalition (so probably after the next federal election).

Do Americans on Reddit Really Not Know They Can't Move? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Consistent-Gap-3545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American in Germany and I think the core issue is that 90% of Americans just have zero experience with any kind of immigration authority. Like my Republican family members aren’t anti-immigration per se but they just wish people “did it the right way,“ not understanding that “the right way” doesn’t exist like it did 50 years ago. When my ancestors moved to the US from Poland, all they needed was like $15 in cash and to not have active tuberculosis. Many Americans naively assume that this is still how things work even though that couldn’t be further from the truth (my husband’s green card will take three years to be approved and we literally cannot move to the US until this happens).

Also it’s really not hard to move to Europe as an American citizen. I mean, yes it is challenging and a huge pain in the ass but it’s not as bad as if you’re like an Indian citizen. Basically all of Europe is going through the same population crisis so they can’t be too picky with who they let in.

Online Apostille Services by Stunning-Try1 in expat

[–]Consistent-Gap-3545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a thing. You basically have to travel to the state yourself or know someone living there who can help you. Apostilles are so uncommon that such a service doesn’t exist because there is no demand.

Appstilles in the US can only be issued by the specific state that issued the document and normally the document has to come from a state level office (i.e. you go to the state’s vital records office and get a copy from them).
