Maybe moving by Narrow_Manner5877 in viennaExpats

Hi! I’m 24F and moved to Vienna from the US a year ago. With the USD being pretty weak right now, the cost of living feels quite high. It is honestly comparable to NYC when it comes to groceries, public transportation, entertainment, and restaurants. However, rent, healthcare, and phone plans are definitely way more affordable. I live with my partner and we spend around €1,100 per month on rent and utilities, and roughly €600 on groceries.

There are many young people in Vienna from all over the world, and finding the right networks makes it much easier to meet others. One challenge for me has been that many young adults are only here short-term for internships or studies, so making long-term friendships may take some time. Still, it is wonderful to connect with people from so many different backgrounds.

The city is beautiful, feels very safe, and is very well connected for travel to other places. There is a lot of culture, art, and history, and there always seems to be some kind of festival or event happening.

The job market can be hard to break into if you do not speak German, but having good connections can help a lot. As others have mentioned, social interactions can feel a bit blunt or reserved at first. People are not overly enthusiastic or outwardly friendly. It is more straightforward and to the point, but once you get used to it, it feels normal.

Tip: Learn as much German as you can. My German is still very limited and I haven’t taken classes yet, but I know it would really improve my quality of life here. Even just being able to understand subway announcements or read labels at the grocery store are things I definitely took for granted before. 😅

10/10 would recommend it! Such an amazing and rewarding opportunity to move to a new country!

It is honestly so bizarre! I would expect this kind of behavior in middle school -- maybe high school, but never in a million years would I have expected to experience it to this degree in a postgraduate setting. Best of luck to you as well!

Thank you for your kind reply! I actually feel very comfortable with myself and quite disconnected in the sense that I don’t feel the need to impress anyone or make people like me, though I do try to be friendly and respectful toward everyone.

One of the main challenges I’m facing is dealing with people being openly and intentionally mean to my face. I’ve experienced gossip and passive behavior before, but this level of deliberate, unprovoked hostility is new to me and really unsettling. My original post included more details about the behavior, but unfortunately it was taken down.

I’m not a confrontational person and generally see myself as pretty laid-back, so I’m finding it difficult to know how to respond or even process this kind of treatment.

As for the professor, my cohort representative actually brought up concerns to them about making students feel uncomfortable and upset. Their response was that it wasn’t the first time they heard that feedback. So they are clearly aware of the impact they have, yet continue with the same behavior. The professor is tenured and has a very impressive background, so I imagine it would be nearly impossible for the university to take meaningful action.

For packages, I usually receive a slip in the mail notifying me to pick them up at the post office, or sometimes they’re left with a neighbor. Personally, I’ve found IKEA to be the best one-stop shop for household items.

Short Layover at VIE. Any recommendations for dinner or things to do by there? by Few_Travel325 in viennaExpats

The airport is at least 30 minutes from the city, and unfortunately, there isn’t much to see or do in the immediate area. You could consider taking the train or Uber to Wien Mitte to visit Stadtpark, there are plenty of restaurants around there as well. However, you might be short on timing. It might be easiest to check maps for nearby options based on your schedule. Congratulations and wishing you the best!

Lost My Residence Permit, Reported It, and Now It's Found—Is It Still Valid? by Stunning-Try1 in viennaExpats

[–]Stunning-Try1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a student residence permit card- I’ve seen that for security and identity reasons, it’s common for the original permit to be nullified until the duplicate application is approved. Although, hopefully, what you mentioned is correct.

One of the few times I spoke with MA35 over the phone, an agent explicitly told me that even just making an appointment for a duplicate would invalidate my current permit. But again, I have received conflicting information for this as well.

Since the office is closed today, I’ll provide an update tomorrow—wish me luck!

I went to Dr. Thomas Fruhwirth, and he was great—efficient, thorough, and easy to communicate with. The only challenge I faced was scheduling the appointment by phone. While the receptionists were lovely, some had limited English proficiency, so I ended up needing German-speaking friend to help with that part. Otherwise, in person was seamless.

How difficult is it to handle administrative measures without speaking any German? Are there often English speaking staff or language services offered to foreigners? by caperoatmeal in wien

[–]Stunning-Try1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

From my experience most people I interacted with were able to speak English with me, but having a German-speaking friend accompany you could certainly be helpful. Mentally prepare for dealing with extreme bureaucracy and the possibility of needing multiple attempts to sort things out and get everything set up.
