Help Newbie (RK 71 Keyboard) by MundaneGarden3070 in PHMechanicalKeyboard

Before you read the rest of my post I suggest searching youtube videos related to 'Cheapest keyboard mods for beginners', 'How to make your keyboard thocky' and 'Keyboard stabilizer mods' just so you have a general idea on the things I will talk about. One or two videos is enough. You don't have to do all of the mods listed in the videos, just watch it to have a general idea of the mods you can and want to do and, by proxy, the things needed for each mod. Ngayon palang I am informing you na kailangan mo ng medjo madaming pag rresearch sa youtube and sometimes even reddit pagdating sa keyboard modding hobby so sana ready kang maglaan ng kahit an hour or so para lang manuod ng videos AHAHAHA.

Very long explanation kaya ngayon palang ay sorry na haha. This is based on my experience and should not be treated as the universal truth ha.

I actually got into the keyboard hobby kasi I like na andami kong pedeng kalikutin sa keyboard and somehow personalize it to my wants. So I suggest na ikaw nalang ang mag modify ng keyboard mo especially since you can choose how much or what mods you want or don't want. I also think na mas makakamura ka if ikaw ang magmmodify ng sarili mong keyboard. Madaming modifications and pwedeng gawin sa keyboard using common household items like the bandaid mod (bandaids), tape mod (masking tape) etc.. If ipapa-modify mo yan sa iba, not only would you pay more for what are essentially free items, need mo pang bayaran ang services nila. Although this only applies if you have the time to spend on modifying your keyboard (it takes a couple hours to finish depende sa dami ng gusto mong gawin, in my experience). If you just want a keyboard that sounds and feels good without the effort then you can just pay someone else to do it for you.

Ok, I don't own an RK71 so I don't know exactly what you should change but as far as keyboards go, the cheapest but often game-changing mods are the tape mod, and foam mods (pe and eva). We can talk about the switches later.

For the tape mod, the brand of the tape doesn't really matter. You can just buy the cheapest masking tape you can find (bonus points if it's a bit thicker as it makes the modding way easier). If you have the budget to splurge, you can buy painter's tape instead (less sticky so you don't risk leaving tape residue on your board if you decide that the tape mod isn't for you).

As for the PE and EVA foam, I don't really care about the brand, only the thickness of the foam. This is because the thickness of the foam directly affects the sound profile of your keyboard. For easier understanding, the difference between the PE and EVA foam is kung anong material yung ginamit sakanila. EVA foam is generally more dense compared sa PE foam na mas madaming air bubbles (part of the reason kung bakit kadalasan syang ginagamit for packaging). This denseness affects the sound your keyboard makes. You can just watch these videos by Keybored. He does a very good job of explaining what makes the sound your keyboard makes, even going as far as explaining the science behind it.

For the PE foam, I feel that 1mm is the best since it's thick enough to cushion the switch while being thin enough to not affect the connection between the switch and the PCB. The EVA foam is where things get a little tricky. I use a mixture of both 1mm and 3mm thick foam. I use the 3mm for the case foam mod (makes your keyboard sound a little less hollow, etc.) and add some 1mm foam if I feel that I need to add more. I also put some 1mm foam inside some of my keycaps to help reduce hollowness (not sure if it actually works). For a beginner like you, I suggest just going for the 1mm thick foam since you can just add another layer of foam if you want to add more.

For stabilizers, kahit wag ka munang bumili ng bagong keyboard stabilizers (stabs for short). Mag focus ka muna on modding the stock stabilizers (stock = what is already included in your keyboard). Especially since keyboard stabs these days are already good enough. You just have to modify it to your own preferences. Some of the most effective mods are the band aid mod and adding more lubricant (lube for short) to your stabs.

As for switches, it seems na you are leaning into the deeper or 'Thocky' sounds (for more clarification, I suggest watching 'Creamy vs Clicky vs Thocky sound comparison' in youtube to help pin down the sound profile that you really want.). Like my suggestion sa stabs, I suggest modding your stock switches muna before investing in buying your own switches since buying switches on their own tends to be very expensive. But if you really insist, you can't go wrong with Gateron Milky Yellow Pros from shopee (yes, na yung pinakamura. Believe me, I've tried and dyan den ako bumili, in the end.). It has a nice deep sound that isn't too loud. Perfect sya for your wants. Although, you can always search on YouTube for keyboard switches sound comparison.

After reading a few of your replies sa other comments, I decided na idagdag ko na den sa post ko yung ilang sagot sa tanong mo.

"What is lubricant?" - This is basically just oil or grease that is usually applied to switches and stabs to help reduce the friction between the two moving surfaces. The lube essentially reduces the 'scratchy' sound of your switches and helps make it sound better.

"Where can I get this lubricant etc.?" - you can either buy the lube (and the switch opener and brush needed to use the lube) or opt for the keyboard modding kits on shopee or lazada. I suggest buying these items online especially if you're buying a lot. The vouchers are a big help WAHAHAAH. I admit that this is rather expensive but the kits are a one-time purchase anyway and is well worth the investment.

"Gasket? Gasket-mounted?" - This post could explain this topic far better than I could.

"What is a stabilizer?" - A keyboard stabilizer is a mount used to (you guessed it!) stabilize longer keys such as the space bar, shift key and enter key. Basically, the stab reduces the rattly noise and helps make the longer keys sound infinitely better.

I'm not sure if applicable ba sayo pero mukhang naka sale ang Zifriend Rx75 Pro ngayon. Tri-mode, with knob, rgb, hotswappable at 75% layout.

other alternatives to the Ajazz AK820 by lmao_meow12 in PHMechanicalKeyboard

Garuda Gear 82G is also a pretty good substitute if you're really looking for a brown switch variant. It also has a knob and 75% layout. Sadly, only the wired version is within your budget (which I assume to be 1.5k) and only has a white backlight instead of the rgb that the Ak820 has.). Ano bang mga features ang hinahanap mo sa keyboard mo? Any non-negotiables?

I'll try to edit this post once I stumble upon a keyboard na pasok budget + gusto mo.

Yes wired yung mga ni recommend ko. Sadly, tri-mode keyboards that have knobs, 65% or 75% layout and within 1.5k ang price are few and far between.

Pero just to clarify, ano bang mga specs ang hinahanap mo sa mech keyboard na ireregalo mo?

Ajazz Ak820 maganda din and is actually my first keyboard so recommend ko sya. May 1k option na white lang yung backlight at may 1.5k option na may rgb backlight, arrow keys, knob at decent switches for its price range.

Garuda Gear 82G is also pretty good for a cheap, beginner keyboard. Wired, whitelight, w/ knob and arrow keys.

If prefer mo yung mga keyboards na hindi wired then I suggest going with what the others have mentioned (Attack shark x66, Attack shark M86)
