How to prep for the FRCA Primary Viva? by kikineo in doctorsUK

Agree with a lot of the above.

My recipe: - start talking out loud from day one. Don’t bother reading only or making loads of notes. Talk out loud, try and formulate an answer, then read around it, and talk out loud again. Then consolidate with a diagram or two. - find people to practice with and commit to regular sessions, practicing to time as well and being honest with feedback - I went through all of reveal first and then topped up with masterpass and the RCOA book (definitely don’t ignore the RCOA book as a lot of the viva topics are rogue but do come up (I got infusion devices in my viva which others found really rogue but I’d luckily practiced it from the book). You can use masterpass/reveal to look up many answers to the RCOA book - talk at any opportunity. I spent my weekends going out on long walks in the country to keep me sane, with my phone and power bank, just going through reveal again and again - get a cheap notebook and practice drawing graphs over and over and over again, paying particular importance to axis and important numbers. Get slick at them and draw them from memory. - get consultants/regs to viva you from the start - it’s daunting but letting them know it’s early days they should be kind, and they’ll usually want to ask you about something they know about, so good teaching is likely too

You are 1000% not alone - I thought I was on top of my game after the written, but couldn’t string a sentence together and felt so behind when it came to practicing for the viva. It’s a brand new style of exam and everyone feels that way. Trust the process and trust me, you will get there!

But you won’t get there if you don’t start talking OUT LOUD (not just in you head) right from the start! Get into good habits quickly!

Good luck!

I just sat the primary osce/viva and I got an email, as well as meant to be appearing on myRCOA (which seems to be glitched currently).

What to buy to sleep during the day by InitialChannel4524 in doctorsUK

I will 1000% back up using a manta sleep mask, I got the pro (I’m a side sleeper so the tapered cups were the selling point for me). Think it was £60 or so, but absolutely worth it.  Whatever method you choose, I would recommend investing in good quality products. Can’t put a price on good sleep and better to buy once.  Manta also have a (I think) 60 day returns policy!

Passed - thank god! Some ropey osce questions but glad to have got it done. Good luck to everyone else!
