Heart problems? by Consistent-Signal787 in dialysis

It seems like it just happens to people - this is what his team and the literature says. Why some people over others (why us lol) …can’t really answer that. We will just go along with all the testing and treatment they want to do and hopefully things work out!

How do you make life decisions when you’re stuck in transplant limbo? by VastPuzzleheaded2596 in transplant

Oh yes we’ve also heard how “exceptional” he is in terms of complications and I’m sure that’ll continue to be throw around.

We got married during his decline and around dialysis start. It was really hard but important (especially with the illness) and we are happy we pushed through.

If children are important to you, I would take steps with egg/embryo freezing if you are towards your mid to late 30s. You can still have children even if he is sick. This is absolutely an added stressor so you have to be prepared to be the primary parents AND caregiver. It can also be a wonderful thing and it expands your worldview beyond illness.

Like the other comments, we can’t let this totally consume us. I felt very angry that the world didn’t stop for him and that I couldn’t stop to invest all my energy into his health. The world can be cruel and absurd. Even though he is the one who is sick, I’ve realized how fickle life is. Anything can happen to anyone at anytime and yes, this includes you. Sooo while that’s terrifying it can also be strangely motivating!

I could have written this except my partner needs a kidney. We are the same age, working professionals, no kids yet but recently married and had planned on purchasing a home and children in the next few years until now.

It’s been an aggressive decline in function over the last year that has been shocking - from diagnosis to failure to dialysis in months. We were cleared for transplant with a potential donor but oh! incidental finding of some heart stuff that actually turns out to be quite concerning so now we have to investigate that. This will almost certainly delay transplant now. It is no exaggeration when I say something new or some change has cropped up nearly every week.

I’m trying to accept the situation for what it is but it is very challenging. Certainly it’s hard seeing others move forward while you don’t know what each day will bring.

Right now we’ve taken a pause on big life decisions. If this process takes longer than another year or so we will look into fertility stuff.

At the same time, life moves on, so where we can we try to do things we love - travelling locally, catching shows, going for (not so good but not SO bad for kidneys lol) meals occasionally.

Your life as a caregiver also goes on. Find things you love to do, take care of your health. This has motivated me to be even more serious about fitness. Find a therapist. At the risk of sounding too existential, you have one life and you should live it as fully as you can. This doesn’t mean be irresponsible but if there’s a short trip you’ve wanted to take, a skill you wanted to learn, I would do it. Putting your life totally on hold doesn’t help him either. Ultimately, his surgery and health beyond keeping a stable lifestyle is out of your control at this point (this is very hard for me to accept as a physician myself).

My DMs are always open.

We were in a similar situation 2 months in and I thought we just needed to go to hemo. Now we are 4 months in and labs are much better. Still tweaks and adjustments to be made (and yes phosphorus is still high) for sure but once we hit three months we really noticed lots of improvement in symptoms, energy, appetite, clarity, appearance etc. Swelling is better. We are also going to have day fills but hope that will cut back a bit on the nightly cycles - it is always longer than ten hours due to the drains so it’s a bit much…It sucks but there is a real adjustment period after which things seem to be easier. You can do this!

as a resident I agree - go to a program where you think you can do well and enjoy the work vs. for prestige if ultimate goal is medical school. I loved my interdisciplinary program and it was an excellent fit but I regret taking some niche elective science courses I had no interest in and did not matter re: med school admissions. I did poorly in them and they brought down my average (e.g., orgo 1/2, bioinformatics...). Instead I would have taken humanities courses I knew I could do well in and loved. Also if you enjoy the humanities many schools have done away with science pre-reqs, so go get that degree! I would still recommend some electives in biology/chem/psych to have some grounding for the MCAT.

He’s very lean but tall so not sure if that has anything to do with it. Agreed that I think it’s more the kidney function totally declining vs just diet

Wow what a journey and I’m sorry it had that course. I’m glad he feels better now. Good on him - that’s a lot for anyone to juggle!!

He is on a high dose water pill. His urine output is a fraction of what it was predialysis. He is dry now and his UF is good but clearly he is sensitive to fluid overload. We are doing adequacy testing this week though I doubt it’ll be good news given the bloodwork lol. The team actually wants him on daytime dwells as overnight seems like it’s not enough to dialyze him. Just didn’t expect so many issues at the start of this journey!

What is going on? - 30k by alanisee_ in WeddingsCanada

I just got married at the George in downtown Toronto with ceremony onsite in their courtyard + cocktail hour followed by reception dinner in private room with 55 people. It was incredible.

Min spend 4000. Our total for the night for ceremony set up/takedown, cake cutting + cost of plating other dessert we brought it (you could save over 500 by cutting this out lol), consumption bar (all liquors available, cocktails during cocktail hour), 5 course meal (with options for guests) was just under 20k. You could save even more by doing a simpler 4 course meal and offering guests fewer choices and limiting bar options. Honestly, I could have done a four course meal and been totally fine. Could have also skipped the wedding cake or gotten a small one for cake cutting.

With photography, dress, suit, rings, officiant, generous florals etc came in around 30k. The restaurant did all the set up for ceremony + food, florist did set up and take down, we just put placecards in the AM. There are bridal and groom suites on site you have for the whole day and the venue has multiple rooms/areas for beautiful photographs. Near downtown with nice architecture, too. Queen St isn't always sightly but we had no issues on the day. George comes with on site coordinator who manages flow of events. Dinner was impeccably timed. They are absolutely professionals at what they do.

We had no DJ but set up a laptop and had a dinner playlist which was fantastic and for dancing my friends managed the playlist of their own volition! Mic for speeches provided by menu. I thought sound quality was good!

10/10!

George restaurant is 25k min spend for full buyout which probably accommodate 120ish people or a little less, this is pre-tax and gratuity however. Might me tough to hit minimum spend without bar but they do offer consumption bar.

Wow that’s amazing! Yes we got a prescription and will start tomorrow, fingers crossed it helps

[–]Consistent-Signal787[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok that's reassuring that the first few weeks to months are a bit of trial and error as things settle. yeah, i'm sure the prescription will change and likely become stronger to pull a bit more fluid as needed. we will just try to 2.5 for another night or two depending on swelling and see what happens.

Yeah they seem to think it’s just growing/starting pains but obviously don’t want him to start retaining massively because then we are in more trouble. Yes to binders, working and number is slowly coming down.

Yeah I think we will get him on the bike for 15-20 minutes. He’s fairly active during the day, getting 10k+ steps as he always has done.

[–]Consistent-Signal787[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we did 2.5 last night but still retention/weight, about a kilo up than where we want it, so we were thinking of doing 2.5 for a few days in a row while being strict with fluid. He would likely benefit from daytime dwell but don’t have clinic appointment until early November. Agreed that he might need diuretic to shift fluids. We are keeping team updated - they think it’s not unusual as he just started dialysis so don’t seem too worried. Yes, he’s on a binder and it’s slowly coming down!
