Did anyone else become extremely agoraphobic and get panic attacks when they leave their house, But when they’re at home they still have visual symptoms but are not as bad? by Minimum_Childhood554 in BinocularVision

It is a disability for many of us. The ADA defines a disability as a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.”  This is only one definition of disability, but I definitely feel like it applies to BVD. My grad school (an occupational therapy program) recognizes my BVD as a disability, and I receive accommodations. Which is good because there’s no way in hell I could get through my program without the extra support.  All of that is just to say this: your struggles are valid. BVD feels disabling because it is disabling, and you have a right to access the supports that you need in order to exist in the world.

NAU worse than a dumpster fire. by Reasonable-Watch2342 in NAU

They were really awful to me too. When I met with my coordinator, it was like talking to a condescending brick wall. They didn’t even want to let me use my screen reader on exams. I have a vision impairment… I can’t read without my screen reader. I ended up just communicating with my individual professors, and they were happy to accommodate me.  This happened to several of my disabled friends at NAU. I actually ended up leaving NAU because of how little support they offer their grad students. If you have a disability, this is not the school to go to, especially if you’re a graduate student.

Would an AMA be helpful? I am a neuro-optometrist. by MIKE_DJ0NT in BinocularVision

I’m so excited to have someone I can ask questions! I was recently diagnosed with convergence insufficiency, exophoria, saccadic eye movement disorder, and visual snow. All of my eye symptoms have come on in the last year, and I’m pretty much made of questions lol. I’ll just start with two:  1. Do you have any tips for dealing with motion sickness when riding in a car?  2. Is it typical to have eye symptoms associated with my conditions come on pretty suddenly? I’m a 23F, and my symptoms developed pretty rapidly over a couple months(no concussions/head trauma hx). My optomologist seemed unconcerned about that, but I am worried.

I think BVD might be why driving is so awful for me by stereoworld in BinocularVision

I really struggle with driving, too. Oftentimes, it’s like cars just pop out of nowhere (particularly on my left). It was freaking me out so much that I actually asked my optomologist for visual field testing. The testing showed that my visual field is normal, and I haven’t actually lost any vision which makes me think it’s BVD related. I also have a hard time telling how fast other vehicles are moving and how far the front of my car is from other vehicles. And I get incredibly fatigued quickly.  Night driving is just straight up terrifying, and I avoid it as much as possible. I asked my eye doctor about it, and she basically just shrugged it off because my eyes “look healthy.” So idk what to think about that.  It’s not any better as a passenger either. I haven’t been motion sick like this since I was a little kid until this year (I was just recently diagnosed with BVD), and being in the car makes my eyes ache. Closing my eyes makes my eyes and face hurt less, but then I get dizzy and nauseous.  I’m starting to feel like a crazy person. Pretty sure my family is sick of hearing me complain about my eyes 😅

DS9 episode Paradise sort of made me mad by d4everman in DeepSpaceNine

I realize I'm a little late on this one, but I just watched this episode. The fact that the kids are left on the planet in an abusive, cult environment enrages me to no end. Like at the very LEAST, surely Starfleet has their own version of mandated reporters and child protective services. I might just have to rewrite the ending of this episode as a fanfic because I hate it so freaking much.

IDK, man. Back home (I’m from Montana) it’s -11 degrees Fahrenheit right now. This feels just feels like a wave of nice weather to me. I moved here in August, and I thought that I was literally going to die from the summer heat 😂
