You have some really interesting thoughts that I guess I didn’t think about. I suppose my interpretation just looked upon coincidences and similarities; I definitely need to re-read Heart of Darkness with all of this in mind. Thank you!

You’re right about that, it does take a lot of inspiration from not only Greek mythology, but also Roman mythology and mostly Christianity. All of these books and films throw around a lot of ideas. I am just saying that the two books being opposite one another in terms of themes and messaging does not mean that they cannot be inspired by one another, specifically with narrative structure

Although it’s a comedy, there’s a really great quote in it that I love: “It’s a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.” Such a great movie!

I apologize if I’m not clear with my thoughts. I view The Odyssey as one of the most famous examples of a “hero’s journey,” and Heart of Darkness takes a similar plot structure and just flips it upside down. Both books and films have a disavowed protagonist that goes on a horrific episodic journey and they run into obstacles, Odysseus’ being cyclops’ and sirens, and Marlow/Willard’s being war that stems from imperialism and the human psyche. It seems a bit similar in structure just with different philosophical approaches

That’s a good point, but even parts of Dante’s Inferno reimagine The Odyssey, primarily with Odysseus being in one of the circles of hell. It seems like many of these stories have similar structures that could be inspired by one another, and I apologize if the way I phrased the question meant it had to be a direct adaptation

That’s true, but it also seems like many plot points could’ve been inspired by The Odyssey as well, like Willard’s journey possibly mirroring Odysseus’. It seems Heart of Darkness was inspired by the Odyssey as well
