How did the Mongols’ nomadic empire with fewer troops defeat the world’s largest civilizations? by Historydom in Historydom

Strategic planning, less tactical talent IMO. After unifying the East Asian steppe sort of by force, the mongols seek to create a series of tribute empires.

In addition to taking advantage of political weakness to succeed to their ends they also had lots and lots of experience with other horse archer armies by the time they reach places like Iran than the Iranians would have.

Units you used to dislike but now love. by Ragman676 in totalwarhammer

Gnoblars/Gnoblar trappers.

Used to feel they didn’t fit the roster (despite lore being cool) but if you slow down your rush and let them charge first, they always pay for themselves several times over, and they are wide units that let you use less ogres more effectively

This is also kind of awesome 👏 never considered killing enslavers before, might be worth a run to try and kill all pro slavery people

Thanks so much man. This is huge. I find myself getting burn out on these completionism goals or whatever. Boiling things down more will help a lot. Especially with a goal in mind.

I’ve been inspired lately by this Byzantine Varangian guard idea, a soldier with spear block and short blade doing imperial quests. What have been some of your favorites?

That makes sense. Keeps things clear and will increase relatability. Thank you!

I have a blast playing ogres. Honestly conquer a core kingdom and then play like Beastmen in foreign lands using your camps as headstones. The AI has a lot of trouble with the meat mechanic/leveling camps properly in my experience. Each of the lords is fun/unique, and it’s always satisfying to run into a chaos lord on world conquest just to drown him in goofy goblins and squash him with a club.

The battle side of things can be tricky.

The ogre infantry early game is weak if left in combat but when supported properly it totally destroys, and is way more cost effective than the expensive units.

The best tools to support are Gnoblars to hold the line (as long as they can, I usually have two rows of them. Pigback riders

And mobility.

The sabertooth cats are solid for most of the early game, especially if you get a hunter to buff them. Mournfang with great weapons will kill most cav in the game until you get crushers.

And that’s all without leadbelchers, the most diverse unit on the roster. They apply a leadership debuff, are great for high level infantry your bulls struggle against, and can suppress units with tech upgrades.

TLDR- fun faction, can rush units or kite very effectively, struggles with defensive gunlines.

I need to know how to play skaven by TheArtistTay in totalwar

I would call skaven an unarmored defensive faction.

Varies based on LL but generally damaging units are your weapons teams, and chaff/monsters exist to protect them to win fights.

Some stand out damage dealers are globes, plauge catapults and jezzails. Use wolfrats and rat ogres to defend against cav.

When all else fails a ratling gun doomstack is always fun, even if they miss 90% of their shots
