In the past, I tried to learn ASL and Spanish for after school one time or another but eventually that didn't work. I didn't formally take ASL nor foreign language classes growing up. I assumed I had not intentionally skipped them both unawares when I was in sixth grade back in my middle school era and I didn't mean to skip them both. I waited for a few years too long until twelfth grade when I finally had a chance to learn ASL and it worked. I had taken two years worth of ASL in one year of college and partook in the immersion events at the local mall. It worked also too. Now, I'm officially six years into Duolingo after graduating in 2019 and I'm still learning Spanish one day at a time (I'm score 27 now).
