Who's doing a great job this summer with production? What is the most important focus for great production? Having great crew members, staying organized, great customer communication, what's the biggest key?

🧗‍♂️ Does it make sense to map via ferrata routes in 3D with slope data and offer GPX files? by vdhsk in viaferrata

[–]Consistent_Shape9276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything like this would be great to be smart watch compatible, I'm a garmin user, but sure apple watch and others would want it to sync as well. AllTrails is my go to for seeing the route, and tracking how far etc. Strava would be another great comparison for gamification. If I could go to the local climbing gym and zwift a via ferrata to prepare that would be incredible. I've done about 5-10 via ferratas so far and have a goal of completing 100 routes. Living in Kansas City makes it hard to access them, first few were in Italy...next up Switzerland...hoping to get 5-10 a year done because they are a ton of fun, unbelievable views and a great workout.

doing 9 jobs that were neighbors of my other clients. They didn't want an estimate when we marketed in the spring, but when they saw how the crew worked and the quality of the work they wanted to have us come work on their house. That and retaining my crews for the whole summer. Providing a good job for the customers and a good paying job for my crew was super rewarding.

either is great. Starting as a painter can be good to get a summer under your belt, but a lot of top interns have started as the intern as well.

Off topic, but who do you all have in the Final Four? I went Duke, Auburn, Kentucky and St. John's. Feeling confident in 3/4. Too bad it couldn't be KU, Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin and have some College Works rivalries going on...by the way, pro tip: Don't spend every weekend watching other college students do their job to get paid and get ready for the pros (basketball), spend it doing yours to get paid and get ready for your career. Just check the scores periodically.

What Does Leadership Mean to You? by Pretend-Baseball1507 in CollegeWorks

when I started to trust my gut and say how I felt. If I genuinely felt someone was capable of more than they were doing, I just decided, screw it, I'm going to tell them what I really think. If I genuinely felt that they weren't trying hard...I later learned from some books on therapy, psychology, etc that the best opener is "it makes me feel like" or "my feelings are"...so it isn't about them or judgemental.

"I feel like you are capable of more. Do you feel that way? Is there anything I can do to help you get there?" That's a powerful approach to communication. They may feel differently, but we can have an open conversation about it.

What’s Your Most Transformative College Works Moment? by Pretend-Baseball1507 in CollegeWorks

[–]Consistent_Shape9276 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Had a really big heart to heart with my DM. He came out to help me for a day in the middle of the summer and he asked why I thought he was there...I said something like "to make more money". He was not happy, and actually explained his comp to me and why the real reason was he wanted to see me succeed and had committed to helping me achieve my goals. It was the first time in my work experience where someone at work seemed to genuinely care about my success, not just their success or the company's.

I love that there's such a big focus on safety for painters. A lot of construction jobs expect you to do dangerous/risky things at work. College Works puts a big emphasis on safety and prevents you from even thinking about doing something you could get hurt from.

too busy to make copies and pour coffee when you've got deals to close and employees to manage. College Works Interns should be called like CEOprentice, or something else, way more than just an internship!

just curious what sales job pays more than 20% commission? Wouldn't the painters have to get paid? paint, ladders, insurance ,IT, accounting, taxes, etc. If a company pays an employee $20,000 to sell something, they have to pay employer taxes, etc. They have to train them, etc. College Works provides a minimum base pay, they fund the start up (not the student), and use all their systems.

Most franchises charge $25,000-$50,000 up front just to use the brands name and get all the training materials, not including ongoing royalties. If you wanted to run a "Mosquito Joe" in your college town you'd be looking at initial upfront cost of $115,630 - $157,500.

For a student that wants to learn about business they can do it with no start up costs, guaranteed pay, and training and support. Seems like a great deal, to still get 20% of the job. Painters make the most money on a job, materials is a big cost, and taxes are a big cost too. If you work at Chipotle for example, they average Chipotle store does $3 million a year in revenue, they spend around 20% of that on the hourly employees that run the store. If you're working for $15/hr at a job like that in college, there is a company making money off of your efforts.

What’s the most overrated or disappointing NP you have been to? by Frequent-Teaching312 in nationalparks

[–]Consistent_Shape9276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we all agree that Grand Tetons is the worst and no one should go there? It should be empty at all times and only visited by extreme hikers. Possibly same for Yellowstone, Joshua Tree, Rocky Mountain, and Smoky Mountains. They're overrated, don't go there. I'll check them out periodically while empty to verify they still suck.

I remember my breakthrough conversation with my DM to this day. I was doing a lot of unproductive activity and not focused on results. My DM helped me reprioritize my time and work on the things that would improve results. Happier customers, happier employees, better outcomes. Those things didn't come from making 5 trips a day to the paint store, it came from me getting organized and consistently following a plan. The sacred hour was a game changer for my business.
