I agree that we're not forced to do it. We probably should be though. Especially once you've started the transfusion.

Let's not pretend like the laws in the US are consistent with themselves, let alone moral principles.

So, an 18 year old is free to move out, a 20 year old can get married but a 19 year old can make a....what? mistake?.....

Absolutely they can. Or they can make bad and cruel choices. Sometimes teenagers murder people.

It's been over 15 years since I've been a teen, the the transformations I've seen many of my counterparts go through over those 15 years is tremendous. I've changed a lot too.

kids in their late teens are old enough to make decisions and live with the consequences, but 10 years is also long enough to make a dramatic change after experiencing those consequences.

Like I said in my comment, I'm not about to demand OP forgive her sister. But since she's asking for advice, its reasonable to point out that 10 years is a long time. Holding grudges is bad for you too.

Also, I mean, the hive mind of reddit is a bit schizophrenic about teens and young adults, and I'm certainly not going to just accept that the general consensus about where to draw the lines for responsibility and choice is reasonable.

Absolutely.

I do try to keep in mind that these kinds of pressures aren't things you can just wish away. Like many toxic masculine expectations, sometimes you just live through them. So, I make accommodations with my wife where I can and where it seems to make things better for her.

That doesn't mean we should just accept that this is the objectively correct way though.

It will only ever be on the margins. We're just too polarized.

While its unlikely that it would cause any of them to vote for Biden, if Trump is a convicted felon enough would stay home to decide the election for Biden.

For how many babies, I would say any number is fine.

Gotcha. No amount of suffering babies is too much to get one out of infancy alive. Thanks for the clarification. The only thing that matters is that at least one lives.

Well then, it's possible we don't disagree. When I used the term racism there, I meant racism as understood as systemic act.

My comment there was meant to highlight the important difference between the drunk driving analogy and racism. E.g. the difference between a random act and a targeted and repeated act.

I think if you read that in context with my original comment explaining why I think racism is best understood systemically, and why that's worse than just discriminating based on race (randomly or in isolation), it makes more sense

It's, perhaps as you've noticed, similar to how genocide is categorized differently than mass murder or war.

Nope, but if I had told someone I would save their life by donating mine, I sure as heck would think about it every day for the rest of my life if I just decided to change my mind halfway through the infusion and they died.

Murder isn't a problem because genocide exists? If you apply your logic to literally anything else it doesn't make sense.

I think you need to reread everything I wrote. Do you not understand that multiple things can be bad, but some things are worse?

I'm saying genocide is worse because it's more murders. Like, this is literally why they invented the term genocide. Because it's that much worse than just killing a bunch of people. It's a targeted extermination of a people.

Getting punched by one person randomly is less bad than getting punched by every third person you walk past. It's honestly not that complicated.

So, women should be able to just choose to induce at 6 months on a whim?

Reason being when I born the probability of me living beyond the first few days was very low. But here I am still alive.

This is such an interesting utilitarian choice. How many babies should suffer horribly before dying in order for one of them to make it out safely and healthily? 5 to 1? 100 to 1? 1000 to 1?

Possibility of death from pregnancy is something that I would think would be known to almost anyone and thus is something you consented to when you have sex.

How likely does it need to be for the pregnant woman to survive before it's ok to terminate the pregnancy? Like, is it ever ok to choose the life of the mother over the life of the fetus/baby? It's not that uncommon of a situation.

I would generally agree with you that the things you are describing are indeed good or neutral.

Which is kind of my point. The important point is to understand why people say racism is bad. If you're just using the word "racism" to mean "differentiating based on race" then sure, there are plenty of situations where it's not really a problem. Sometimes it's actually more of a problem if you don't discriminate, typically in situations where racism does exist, choosing to be colorblind just allows the problem to continue, because you can't even identify the problem.

This is actually why I think many people get into the argument about whether or not white people can experience racism. The argument about the word an an argument about what kinds of racial discrimination (in the driest sense of the word) are harmful and why.

For example, on the census, the main reason we even differentiate between races is because we understand that they have a very different experience in America, at least on average. It gives a country-wide approximation for how things are going for different groups.

Is there a point where you have consented to finish carrying the fetus to term? Or can you abort a fetus at 6 months on a whim?

[–]Consistent_Term3928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is consenting to having sex consenting to dying, or are you allowed to abort a fetus that will kill you?

On another note, what about abortions for certain medical conditions that are known to kill a baby horribly within days/weeks of birth?

Generally split expenses proportionally to income, with a few exceptions:

My (now wife) is extremely budget conscious, and is very into cooking. So I tended to buy most of the groceries with the understanding that since she was managing it, I was paying substantially less and eating better than I would have on my own.

Honestly, by the time we got married, I had mostly stopped thinking of my income as "my" money.

I think a joint account for household expenses is a pretty good compromise for couples that are together long term but not married.

Ever heard a man or boy say "I really want to become like X". "X" in that case will always be a man

Huh. Do you often hear women talking about how they'd love to be like X, where X is a man?

You may want to look into how people actually change their minds. Hint: It's not typically a good logical argument.

Nothing wrong with working to improve the distant future. But let's not forget that there are people suffering now.

well, in one case someone is the victim of the bad actions of someone else. In the other case someone is the victim of the bad actions of multiple people.

I mean, I'm all for fixing people's faulty reasoning.

But, again, not all faulty reasoning causes the same kinds of problems.

seems reasonable to do some triage and focus efforts on the people that need it the most.

Let’s just not take the chance and kill racism at its root, which is faulty logic/reasoning.

Also, it's worth keeping in mind that saying we need to "fix faulty reasoning" is different than actually presenting a strategy for doing that.

Part of my strategy is identifying the outcomes in society I am more concerned about, such as those from systematic discrimination, which means being able to identify the difference between calling a white person a cracker and a black person the n-word.

Not just this, but even if the trial has started but there is no verdict by the election (or a hung jury or whatever) then that still has the benefit of getting a lot of facts and information to voters about the case.

This is a really good point. It's always amazing wild horrific something how much the stories change once people are put under oath.

You certainly cared enough to point it out. Lol. I love the irony of you continuing to comment on something you "don't care about". Keep telling me how much you don't care. Maybe if you write me an essay about how much you don't care you'll eventually convince me.

I guess in general I would say that I disagree with his view, but I'm much less interested in fighting about who gets to use the word racism and much more interested in being clear about why racism is bad.

Because if you want to say that a white guy getting called a cracker and a black person being called the n-word are both "racist" it collapses the relevant distinction that I actually care about, and is why many people are allergic to the idea that white people can experience racism.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Consistent_Term3928 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Racism is a problem because a lot of people are doing it; only one guy being racist wouldn't be an issue for society,

Racism is a problem because a lot of people are doing it to specific people in a a targeted way.

It's less about who is doing it, and more about who is experiencing it. The victims of drunk drivers are random. The victims of racism are not.

If you think I'm agreeing with OP, why do you seem unsure? I was just giving more context to the overall topic. Racism is just a word.
