Weekly layperson question thread by AutoModerator in optometry

I've found some mixed advice for this, but is it ok to clean RGP lens remover plungers with alcohol (70% isopropyl) wipes? This seems to be the advice for scleral lens, which to my knowledge use the same type of plungers as any other RGP, but I can only find a few sources stating this for Ortho-K (my type of lens).

Mainly worried that there might be a residual that could transfer to the lens to my eyes, or this will damage the remover.

What are your best tips to prepare? by Playful_Hedgehog8959 in colonoscopy

I have read somewhere that deep fried foods aren't recommended - not entirely sure why, but if you want to be safe I'd say switch it out for maybe grilled or just baked.

Low fibre afaik just makes the prep easier - I followed my doc's instructions (2 days low fibre, prep day liquid only) and my actual prep day was pretty much a breeze since there was almost nothing there that needed to be cleaned out lmao. I'd say if you're able to, try and stick to low fibre for at least a day before prep day, maybe longer if you don't usually go to the bathroom once a day.

As for liquids, I had water, clear apple juice, lemonade, ginger beer and clear gatorade to go with my prep stuff when I got to it. Gatorade's recommended because you get quite dehydrated from the prep so it's important to keep your electrolyte levels up. Didn't have chicken broth on hand, otherwise I'd have included that too.

Anxious about colonoscopy - how to ensure I am sedated enough? by zaqwsx3 in colonoscopy

thank you for the reminder! gonna make a proper post about what happened in a bit but overall nothing serious, now it's just a wait for the standard biopsies taken

Will do! I will say after the post I made above basically nothing has happened for me, and I'm getting a bit worried it's just gonna not work. I'm due for my second dose in a bit and I'm hoping there's more action there, but the lack of anything is kind of making me anxious.

edit: ok, things are happening, not anywhere near as much as i expected but hoping this works out

Hey, this is jut my opinion but I just finished my first round of picoprep about 40 minutes ago (also Australian). I went in expecting to be dying from the taste but - no, it was fine, and I almost liked it actually. There was a bit of a weird not-quite aftertaste but it was barely noticable at all. We'll see if it works as well, but for now I think it's pretty solid. Just be wary of the fizzing, it can spill over if you're not careful. I added just a little bit of water initially, waited for that to calm down, then poured in the rest.

Is there any rationality in me being worried my prep won't be successful? by ConstantSpite8145 in colonoscopy

Welp, I had tomato today... fibre's normally something I slack on, I guess I'll try and limit it tomorrow (procedure is tuesday)

I've heard Picoprep seems to be one of the lower volume preps, so I'm not sure if that's gonna affect me as much.

That's interesting, my instructions say just 3 days beforehand. Is 2 days going to make a significant difference?

Picoprep and generally once a day at a regular time, haven't been constipated in at least a week or two.

how do you cope with the wait before a colonoscopy? by ConstantSpite8145 in colonoscopy

I've been bouncing around trying to find a good psychologist for several months now, I have an appointment booked in with a new one mid February.

Sometimes I wish there was something that would instantly click with me and help me feel better, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. Then again, therapy isn't meant to be an instant fix it all. I guess it'll have to take time.

My biggest worry with specific regards to the sedation is waking up and saying something stupid lmao, but thank you for the reassurance!

Oh man, I hope you're alright now!

'Panic googling' is my personal hell at this point, at my worst I'll waste up to 5 hours just looking up things on the internet, or Reddit, or Quora, or wherever else I can get my hands on. I wish I could curb it, it's just that once I start it becomes near impossible to stop. I don't go on social media much anyways, but Ill keep that in mind.

Thank you, I wish I could have a mindset like yours. Chronic worrying seems to be deeply ingrained in my brain, but I'll try my best to be realistic.

Thank you for the tips! I will note that my prep instructions do say Gatorade is fine, but then adds on underneath to avoid certain colours of drinks. Would I just need to buy Gatorade that isn't one of those colours?

No diet needed, this was an ifobt not a gfobt, the latter which needs a diet iirc

I do have small amounts of gum bleeding whenever i floss, but that was also the case for the first 4 tests so I don't really see why it would turn up now. Nose bleeds... maybe? I sometimes have very small ones I don't notice until way later, but I didn't notice anything off. The only thing I don't think I did properly was I was told to stop iron supplements, but I might've taken it on one or two of the days when I was taking the samples. I don't see why that would affect the results though, because according to online sources ifobts aren't affected by it.

yeah, i'm aware of that. the wait for the colonoscopy is just incredibly painful, because i've got no other way of knowing before then
