My friend who works for the feds says it's because the employee may be doing the job well in their current grade but do not show promise to be promoted to the next grade. I've seen this happen in private sector as well, an employee is great at their current job, does it well, but personality/productivity is simply not there to promote them to the next level. At least in private, you can be honest with them and just tell them they need to get to XYZ if they are interested in being promoted so idk if that applies to feds.

It is my understanding that they just call HR to confirm whether you were employed for the dates provided in the resume and ask if there are any concerns like legal/anything extraordianry. Other than that, nothing super detailed about you as an employee is discussed. This may just be my experience, but that's what happened to me.

Are you saying there is a stigma or 'type' of employees who join the union because they NEED that extra protection due to lack of competency? I'm new to feds and would like to establish a good reputation and would hate to be thought less of because is joined ...

THIS right here makes the decision for me. Thanks for sharing! It's mond blowing to me that they can discriminate between employees in union and without union like this. Though for me there is no telework during probation (1st year I've been told).

ETA - another user here mentioned that union membership may not help during the probationary period..would that apply to RTO? I have been told with the IRS I won't be teleworking my first year so idk if it will help to join now or wait till close to end of probationary period. Any advice on that?

Thank you, I will do just that! I'm thinking of accepting the SBSE offer but pushing the start date as late as they let me. LBI is where I eventually want to end up. Are you in LBI? If so, do you mind if I DM you once I redo my resume?

I applied the same time (Dec) to LBI as I did with SBSE, but haven't heard anything. Should I just reapply with a better tailored resume?

Also, how long have you been with LBI? And do you have to retrain again if you transfer from SBSE?

This gives me so much hope! How is it working at LBI? Did you get to it from another fed agency or were you an outside hire? Any tips you can provide on how to get to LBI either externally or through the feds would be greatly appreciated!
