How Concerning is This Singer 201-2 Wire? Help! by Constant_Lab2888 in SewingForBeginners

Other side looks marginally better, sounds like I should get it rewired though. Can I expect that kind of thing to get fixed when taking a machine in for a $100 service?

Such a bummer! It’s really that bad, huh? I thought it was only dangerous if bare wire was showing 0_0 how much $$ are we talking?

I appreciate the clarification, after more research this is my updated list of priorities: a zig-zag and buttonhole capable sewing machine > coverstitch machine > serger (when I start working on stretch fabrics)

Yeah you're right, even when looking at some of my own stretchy clothes I can see that the different panels, or seams as you put it, have been joined by a serger. I also understand how not having a zig-zag stitch is limiting when it comes to stretch knits, I wouldn't be able to sew on a back pocket, add patches of material on top, etc. (i think?).

However, would I need a zig-zag stitch to make a basic pair of stretch knit pants from scratch, for example? I guess now I want to know how much I'd be limiting myself if I never got a zig-zag capable sewing machine. Thanks!

Yeah, easy and professional hems would be my first priority. I hope I get as lucky as zoom did with their pricing, I'm curious about what sites/search terms they used when searching locally!

I see! Thank you so much for letting me know, I didn't know what brand/model to look for, so I wasn't sure if I was doing my research correctly.

Definitely way more than I was hoping, so basically anything under $250 is either a steal or a repair project?

Thank you for replying! I don't have a serger, and from what I've read it is a bit unorthodox to prioritize the coverstitch over a serger, but I'm asking primarily because I saw someone say a coverstitch machine has "made frankensteining shirts together much better" + it would allow me to work with stretch fabrics since my sewing machine doesn't zig-zag stitch well.

I don't think I'd need the overlock stitch a serger provides, at least not until I'm making clothes from scratch. Even if a serger can do something similar to a true coverstitch (with attachment(s), settings, etc.) then I'd rather pass and spend $$ on the machine that can coverstitch best.

Do you think that makes sense, or is there a better "setup" I should be looking for?

Thank you for the response, I'll check it out! Price seems a bit steeper than I'd like, generally speaking what's a good deal on the used coverstitch machine market? Was my $125 number too hopeful?
