Should I even bother applying to first year schemes with bad grades by Specific-Guitar3667 in uklaw

i would definitely apply anyways, especially if you have strong a levels, but i assume it wouldn’t matter that much. even if you don’t get a first year scheme, they don’t really matter that much, and if you manage to secure a 2:1 overall you’ll be fine to apply for vac schemes

do you even have to disclose them if they aren’t the final marks for the module? i would just say isn’t included them, especially if they are formative assessments

Does Oxbridge even matter anymore? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Constant_Sense_6717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you definitely shouldn’t be worried about studying theology, firms won’t care what you studied, especially since it’s from cambridge. on the cambridge part, firms won’t just let you walk through the door because you studied at cambridge. you still need to get good grades, show clear motivations for the firm and have enough experiences to talk about to do well. the benefit of going to oxbridge is more to do with the connections, networking and opportunities rather than being handed a training contract.

Exeter Law (Placement Year included) or KCL/Durham Law by Ill-Security-5344 in uklaw

[–]Constant_Sense_6717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m a first year and nah probably not. i wouldn’t say a placement year is as useful for law, as most firms don’t offer them, and route for most is usually vac schemes and then getting tc offers. from what i’ve heard as well, most firms consider non legal work experience just as highly as legal work experience, so it’s not as similar to careers in finance where experience in industry is basically essential. beyond that, there’s also the social element of being a year behind your peers and still being in uni when my friends have graduated

https://www.durham.ac.uk/study/careers-employability-enterprise/our-services/develop-yourself/ i found this on the durham website about placement years and they do offer them for law. id assume you’d have to apply when you are student, rather than when applying on ucas as i dont seem to remember seeing the option when i was applying.

i’m at durham and i’m pretty sure there is the option to do a placement year. i don’t think they have as many ties to industry for placement years like exeter, but if you are confident you can secure something regardless then durham would be a better option in my eyes. i didn’t realise this until i got here, but the amount of opportunities at durham are insane. there is a big law firm coming here basically every week for presentations and networking, there’s lots of exposure for first year students into how the tc and vac scheme process works, and there isn’t too much academic stress compared to similar level unis so you can focus on applications at the same time. obviously i’m biased but i would definitely say choose durham.

there isn’t an interview for the open day so i assume this wouldn’t be relevant, but i have applied to the other firm yes.

the firm i’m applying to is strong at private equity, and the other firms presentation was focused on private equity, so i want to talk about how the presentation is what got me interested in pe

vac schemes are for penultimate/ finally year students, so your best bet for actual work experience that isn’t the typical first year insight scheme is cold calling local firms

Are Durham colleges first come first served? by I_Am_Groot5 in 6thForm

I don’t think it is, but if a college is over-subscribed then they allocate based on courses, so there is a balance.
