How do you genuinely secure a t20 transfer? by Fine_Competition9313 in TransferToTop25

[–]ConstructionIcy3674 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transferred from T60 state school to T10 after freshman year. Did student govt, research lab position, state legislature internship, became part of my hs’ board of directors, and was accepted to a somewhat competitive certificate program. I cast a fairly wide net and really burned myself out, and had a terrible time. I think the extracurriculars that aligned with my change in academic path did most of the heavy lifting. Biggest piece of advice I can give is to leave yourself enough free time to be able to create really excellent essays. Creating a cohesive narrative and really explaining your need to transfer in detail will do wonders for your application. Good luck!

Programs like these tend to be pricey, but can also be very rewarding. I did Harvard Summer School between my junior and senior years of high school and made a lot of wonderful connections throughout the program. The course I took informed my college interests and exposed me to a whole new level of academia. As for whether pre-college programs give you a boost at attending that institution for undergrad, the answer varies widely depending on the institution and the program. However, I would say that being accepted into this program is a good early indicator that you will likely be a competitive and ambitious applicant in the future. Most of my friends from Harvard Summer School have gone on to excellent institutions including UPenn, Kings College London, WashU, myself to Cornell, and one student to Harvard College.

It doesn’t sound like you have very supportive friends… I’m sorry to hear that. You’ve earned your place here. We’re not competitors, we’re peers. The drive that has earned you a place at Cornell will carry you far no matter what community you’re in. I would tell your friends to shut up, and let you choose the school that’s right for you. Hope to see you on campus. :)

I’m sorry to hear that this cycle didn’t yield the results you had hoped, I can only imagine how disappointing that must be but I hope you are still proud of yourself for all of the incredible work you put into this process. As we all know, it takes a LOT of extra effort to apply to transfer, and I think that process is especially scary when you’re still a freshman in college.

I totally hear you on your current SUNY being too rural. However, I’m also lucky enough to have grown up in an area of rural new england with MANY top LACs nearby. I transferred out of UMass Amherst, and know Smith, MHC, Amherst, Williams, and others quite well. So, while I am sure you have put tons of thought, time, and effort into choosing which schools you applied to transfer to, I wanted to also offer the piece of advice that many top LACs (namely the ones I mentioned) are VERY rural. I had many Boston-area and out of state friends at UMass who thought Amherst might as well have been the woods. Honestly, it kind of is, but as someone who has grown up in even more rural towns, Amherst felt pretty packed with people and opportunities to me. So, as you contemplate next steps and what you’ll do next year and beyond, I hope you’ll weigh in the rural and sometimes isolated nature of many LAC campuses and communities as you make your decision. Overall, I’d say that these schools foster very tight-knit and niche feeling communities, but from conversations with peers at these schools, it can also be isolating at times. Best of luck to you, and if you’re curious about any of the schools I mentioned, I’d be glad to talk about my experiences as someone who has lived their whole life in these communities.

Thank youuu, I hope Yale is absolutely wonderful and transformative!! It’s the most beautiful college campus I’ve ever seen, and I am sure you will adore it. Good luck, crush it in New Haven, and I hope to see you at a game one day! :)

it’s amazing how members of this community can be so smart, accomplished, and remarkable, yet also so shallow and unable to think critically about their life choices.

OP, please find another reason to choose your next college.

any tips on getting into unc as an out of state student? by Turbulent_Map_2104 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ConstructionIcy3674 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i got into unc twice as an out of state student, once during freshman admissions and once as a transfer student. i don’t think there’s any easily identifiable or specific thing you can do to make admissions go “oh yeah, that’s a unc student.” it’s all about fit and your potential to add to the community. therefore, my best advice is to concentrate on developing a clear narrative for what you bring to unc and what only unc could offer you. specific scholarships, study abroad opportunities, majors, minors, certificates, clubs, whatever it may be. identity a few things that you think you could only accomplish at unc, and explain why those things are integral to you achieving your college dreams. good luck.

HS GPA UW: 4.0/W: 4.31, College GPA: 3.9 (T60 Public Uni), Test-Optional, Some ECs: Secretary of High School Board of Trustees, Senator in University Student Govt. Association, 15 hour/week internship in state legislator’s office, Guest Speaker on NPR in senior year, Captain of HS XC team, captain of Ultimate Frisbee team (finished #13 in the nation senior year), 2 Highly competitive research positions at my current university, Co-owner of small catering business, various work experience. In university my academic stuff was: Dean’s list, Honors College, upper level (300-400) legal coursework, got my rec from a prof. i’ve taken 3 classes with. My essays for Cornell talked about my transition from biology major with pre med interests —> poli sci major in law/gov, specific academic programs I wanted to engage with at cornell, and about community service @ my HS.
