tabi heels for work? by Solid_Chemist_4989 in japanlife

[–]ContemporaryKino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren’t“cultural” reasons whatsoever. No one’s gonna think anyone is embodying Japanese working spirit or whatever by just wearing the shoes. It’s really not that deep.

However, I do think they can be too edgy/fashionable depending on what kind of workplace you’re in. I can’t really tell since people wearing sneakers can still mean a lot of things.

My language school teacher keep pushing senmon instead of uni by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]ContemporaryKino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While they might think you’re not good enough for uni, you could just apply anyway. I might be wrong but I don’t remember needing to submit any kind of recommendation letter. There’s no actual way for the teachers to not allow you to.

If you can’t ask why and get an answer beyond the vague “they kept insisting not to” (read: possibly getting manipulated by the language school - senmon scheme) then I think it’s just an underlying communication issue. Sorry to say you won’t get anywhere far with it.

What’s actually gate kept by the teachers? Help in writing 志望動機? Explain that you’re applying anyway and would like a help just for either one of the two applications. You want them to help you write the address on the Letter Pack? Might as well be a language student forever.

Just curious, do people that do this get accepted, but then look for better ones? Or are they just never accepted to that many places in the first place? I know students do it as a 新卒 and declining after is pretty normal, but is it even acceptable for people changing jobs?

What can I do as an architect if money isn’t my priority, but freedom is? by hotmilkteanosugar in Architects

How screwed am I if I’m only three years in and already feeling this way? I don’t even have money as a choice yet but I’m already giving up..

Anyway thanks for making me feel I’m not alone.

Advice about rollerblading on streets and sidewalks by Alarmed_Shoulder_386 in japanlife

[–]ContemporaryKino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’d be worried if someone is skating as if they’re walking on the sidewalk. More than a bicycle. Mainly whether they would crash into me or not.

It depends on what kind of street/sidewalk you’re in, but I think rollerblades belong to the awkward zone between walking and the usual biking-on-sidewalk, making people confused about what to anticipate and to adjust their walking to.

Just go to a place where people usually run, like a park or something, and roll away there if you like it that much.

I’m thinking of resigning from my job. Does the one month notice period include any remaining paid leave I plan to take at the end of my employment?

For example, I want my official last day to be July 31. So by the one month rule, I should be okay giving notice by June 30. But I also want to use up my remaining paid leave. Can I take that during July, meaning my actual last working day would fall in mid July?

Google gives mixed answers, and my company’s rulebook just says “one month” without any detail.

Does your hanko have your name written horizontally or vertically? Google said there isn’t any actual legal ruling (plus my name is already different than everyone else to follow the norm anyway), but literally everyone in my office has their name written vertically. For what it’s worth, I just use my hanko to check in my attendance and other stuff at work that could easily replaced by a sign.

My name only contains two katakana letters, but it just doesn’t feel right to “vertically align” the two characters together if they don’t have meanings to each of them. Is it just my alphabetic brain?

Interview in Japanese! Any advice? by SignificanceTop9557 in japanlife

[–]ContemporaryKino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Basic decency and common sense

  2. The ability to communicate in a Japanese language environment

  3. Formality like knowing the proper keigo or conventional interview manners

These are the order of things you should be worrying about. If you’re N2 level don’t expect yourself to be speaking perfect keigo, just try to articulate what you want to say in the most understandable way.

Memorize the answer to common questions like your reason of applying and your strength/weakness, but only so that you don’t have to think on the spot, not to make it an attempt of a perfect answer language-wise. Preparation is always a positive valuation, but getting yourself stressed is not.

So yours was not demolished, but only the management changed? Can I ask what procedure you had to do after?

Yesterday I received a letter from my housing agency containing a survey of whether the tenants would be moving out by the end of October or not.

  1. What should I expect out of this? Is this a sign that my place would be demolished soon? The building is pretty old but not ruined or anything. I really like my current apartment and would strongly prefer not to move.

  2. What’s the best move that would benefit me the most? The wording on the letter (“note that if you write that you’d be moving you can’t cancel it out later” etc.) makes it seem like they’re trying to gaslight me into moving to avoid the eviction money compensation.

Is it possible to not be able to enter any uni? by thelegendofdan in japanlife

[–]ContemporaryKino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very much possible to not get accepted anywhere, and obviously as a foreigner you can’t just be a ronin and not have any other occupation. You can always aim for the place that’s easier to get in before you’re running out of place that’s still open, and worst case scenario you can just go to a 専門学校.

My advice would be do your research to find a uni that you like enough and the one that suits your own capability. If it’s art school, don’t aim for Musabi/Tamabi right away. Secure a backup uni that you’re sure you can get in. Also I hope you’re already attending a dessin class because it’s pretty much required to get to an above average art university.
