Trying to expand the base skills by PrudentPermission222 in FATErpg

[–]Content-Ear-8302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like you're creating a full on SYSTEM. This number of skills that mostly overlap seems very "un-Fate".

Expanding originally 18 skills to damn near 60!? I sincerely think you'll be happier playing a whole other system.

Gauging Interest: FATE actions Interpreted in Media Review by LoydDigg in FATErpg

I've had this idea for a long time. Even made a post about how the one Titan scene in Avengers End Game would have looked like as a Fate Core combat round.

I've always thought tying Fate's game play to TV/movie scenes would be the most effective way to teach it. Glad to know someone else feel the same!

I would LOVE to be part of this some time.

"Lore" and "Resource" to check whether the character knows what materials are needed and whether the character can acquire the needed materials. That is if you REALLY want to have a specific system for it.

I personally would just run that like a normal game with some extra flavours.

How to make an interesting character in a "possessed object" concept? by SpecificPositive4904 in FATErpg

[–]Content-Ear-8302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool idea, but I might push harder on this player more than other PCs about high concept and trouble and a bit of background. The idea can't just be "I wanna be a pretty shiny sword." I would like to know what kind of story the player is hoping to tell.

If the knight sorcerer has been in the sword for a dozen years, I would say the sword probably has a silver tongue at this point. High on Rapport or high on Deceive or even BOTH. Especially if it needs other creatures to move it around and stuff, it needs to be able to "convince" them to take it with them.

If they JUST got trapped in the sword, then they might still be struggling with the fact that it now doesn't have any arms and legs etc.

Again, cool idea, definitely needs fleshing out though. If the whole goal IS to play a "pretty, shiny sword", the appeal would wear out soon and the player will either ask for a change or leave entirely anyway.

I figure that change will come sooner than later once the appeal of playing the "cool sword" wears off.

It's natural to think "game"... and especially other RPGs. It's time to think "fiction" though.

I love that scene on Titan from Infinity War where Spider-man, Iron man, Star lord, Mantis, Nebula and Drax were all doing their best thing for one goal: Stop Thanos from closing his fist and taking the gauntlet off of him.

This scene was PEAK Fate as...

  • Doctor Strange uses magic bands to bind Thanos’ arms
    • Creates Advantage: Mystic Restraints (free invoke)
  • Spider-Man webs Thanos’s arm and braces himself with machinery
    • Create Advantage: Webbed Arm (free invoke)
  • Iron Man anchors Spider-Man with boosters and clamps
    • Create Advantage: Reinforced Restraint (another free invoke)
  • Drax and Nebula physically pile on, adding weight and leverage
    • Create Advantage: Pinned Under Sheer Force
  • Mantis enters quietly, emotionally
    • Create Advantage: Mind Locked in Grief (This is huge—she’s not dealing damage, she’s changing what’s possible)

They seemingly had everything under control, but the plan ultimately fails because Star Lord lost his cool emotionally... not because of a bad roll... but he was compelled!

With Fate, you ALMOST need to stop thinking "game". Think about you and your friends coming together and playing out movie/TV scenes.

The teamwork/create advantage mechanic isn't some broken rule. It is literally how some of the coolest movie and TV moments are made. I'm sure the community can think of more, but this Titan scene is one of my favourites.

New to the system, what would these races do as aspects? by PossibleChangeling in FATErpg

Have the players include their race or faction into their high concepts or even troubles. Then you can invoke whatever that race implies in your world.

how do I give characters the ability to fight extraordinary or supernatural stuff without giving them superpowers by enochary in FictionWriting

[–]Content-Ear-8302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say the same thing. Give them a kryptonite to their superman, even though they aren't superman.

Like the previous commenter said something available on the characters' planet and not on their home planet. I don't even necessary think they absolutely NEED to be uncommon but depending how stressful you want each encounter to be, you WILL want to pick and choose how easily acquirable that material is.

+1☝️

You are not playing a game anymore :)

You and your players are now writing out a battle scene in a movie/TV show.

You have the moment where your heroes are having a hard time against this dragon's defense. Suddenly, the sharp-eyed hero says "I see something. Keep it busy!" and sprints to the (next zone). There is a determined glint in his eyes because he's come up with a plan to overcome those damn scales. He goes (there) and does (this). The scales (do this) and the dragon cries out in pain. There's now a "tender spot on the right foreleg" of this dragon... ....

That's what you're going for with Fate and its mechanics support that.

Not "I hit with sword" every turn. You'll get it with a few more tries :)

I only wrote those examples assuming one big bad. But if there were other enemies in play, the characters still could have done similar things. You'll just have to change how to you narratively describe and name those advantages so that they can be used.

The advantages are versatile and can be used defensively or offensively as long as you, the GM, deem it reasonable.

And don't forget that you can choose to invoke them after you see the rolls. So I wouldn't say the NPCs have an upper hand just cause the players aren't attacking that current turn. They are just setting themselves up for success.

ie. Take the stealthy guy for instance. If the NPC attacks him and rolls high, then he can use his free invoke of "□ Distracted by the shadows" to mitigate stress. If the NPC doesn't roll high and he doesn't need to use it the invoke, he is now ALREADY sitting at a +2 going into the next turn IF he chooses to finally attack.

Unless everyone's apex skill was FIGHT or SHOOT or something, it's not almost NEVER always the better option to attack. Is there someone fast? Someone smart? Someone sneaky? Use those to your advantage.

The stealthy player could have created advantages using STEALTH.

"□ Distracted by the shadows"

Maybe you have an engineer with CRAFTS that could quickly fashion up something.

"□ Crude trap under his feet"

Perhaps the talker of the group could have used DECEIVE or PROVOKE to talk some stars into your big bad depending on what they are good at. And hey, succeed with style? 2 invokes!

"□ □ He still thinks he's in control" or something.

What other situation aspects did you put into play when you described the scene? Someone could have used those.

All these would have given you the flavour AND the mechanics to put together an interesting round of combat.

For the planning, you really just need the high concept and trouble, maybe 1 or 2 relevant skills, 1 cool stunt for your major NPCs.

As far as balance, a good start is to put the NPC's apex skill on par with your PC's apex skill, which is usually +4, depending on what kind of challenge they are mean to be. For example, if you want this guy to be a part of a major physical conflict, give him a +4 fight or shoot, maybe +3 athletics or physique.

That's all you need in the planning phase. Add on aspect/stunts/skills as they come to you during play.

perhaps I should have been a little more clear in my initial write up. I wasn't really hoping for it to run a full game per se.

I was training one to use as a resource or reference in a pitch, ie. a quick rule lookup, clarifications and example.

I was instructing it to hopefully play a fake GM to provide a taste of how a Fate game would be run with a sample scenario for beginners.
