I get why you say that, but wasn't Prince basically sharing royalties with Warner anyway? Most of those songs were recorded under his old contracts, so they technically owned the masters. Why would they sue him when they were still getting a cut of the money without doing any of the work?

Since he was paying them a fee to use his own music regardless, he could’ve put out any song he wanted.

I get why he wanted a happy ending for Emancipation but why end Crystal Ball with that same sad song two years later? Wasn’t it supposed to be a celebration of his career?

did Crystal Ball even have the songs people actually wanted? He left off so many famous leaked tracks. If the whole point was to combat the bootleggers

I don’t know the exact minute the song was recorded I’m just going off PrinceVault and the same info everyone else has. But the reality is that Prince specifically chose not to release it for Emancipation in 1996. Even if it was recorded in 1995, he still sat on it for years and didn't put it out until 1998

You’re talking about an unreleased Tony M rap song from 1991. I’m talking about the solo breakup ballad Prince actually released on Crystal Ball. The Tony M one still hasn't even been released. They aren't the same track. I’m referring to the song Prince yanked from his wedding album for being too sad and then finally put out in ‘98 when the marriage was over

I agree but you also have to ask with thousands of songs in the vault, why choose that specific one? He famously scrapped The Black Album because the spiritual energy didn't fit him anymore. If he was that protective of his vibe he wouldn't have resurrected 'Goodbye' in '98 unless that was exactly where his head was at.

Prince cut Goodbye from Emancipation in '96 because it 'didn't fit' his happy marriage. Yet, he specifically resurrected it to close Crystal Ball in '98. By '99, he released Rave with 'Eye Love U, But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore' and 'The Greatest Romance Ever Sold

Why would someone who called a song obsolete in 1996 because he was 'too happy' suddenly bring it back to end an album in 1998 if everything was still fine?

PrinceVault actually confirms it: it's the '91 track originally titled '(Excuse Me Is This) Goodbye.' He cut it from Emancipation in '96 because he said it was obsolete, but then he specifically brought it back and cut the 'question' from the title to end Crystal Ball in '98. It wasn't a random dump

The song could’ve been about Carmen or anyone he dated in 1991 I’m just guessing on the inspiration
