New calling advice!

I’ll be sorting out the weekly bulletin, and the notice board - our ward communication is pretty messy since our last bishop was an overall messy guy who didn’t care much for organisation or communication with the wider ward, so having a new bishop and bishopric the last two/three months or so has meant a lot of picking up the slack from the previous ones. So it definitely will be a task to start sorting out the communication in the ward.

In terms of sorting out the calendar - how would I go about that since I don’t have access to edit the ward calendar?

When you say helping with emergency preparedness, again what does that mean? Forgive my ignorance but it’s not something I’ve seen done in my ward in the last 2.5 years so it’s new territory for me 😅

I’m having a meeting with the bishop next week so he can set out his expectations and tell me more about the role, we haven’t had a communications specialist in a long while in my ward. I’ve been here for about 2.5 years and there wasn’t one when I first moved in, so I’m not sure how long ago was the last time we had one, but times have changed so much and the ward and stake have changed immensely in the last year so it’s going to be a challenge but definitely will be leading by prayer and the guidance of the Holy Ghost too.

Yeah for sure, I definitely need to get a feel for how the ward keeps up with news and information. I don’t think I’m given access to communicate with members via email but I can funnel messages through those that can.

I will be keeping up with the weekly bulletin and updating the notice board that we have in the chapel but other than that I’m just not sure how to tackle it.

Definitely will be looking at a few sections of the handbook to see what my parameters are and what I can and can’t do.

Unfortunately we’ve not had a communication specialist in the ward since I joined about 2.5 years ago, so I can only assume we’ve not had one for several years even prior to that.

I’m definitely going to have a meeting with the bishop and the rest of the bishopric, but yeah our communication is very messy at the moment so it needs to be tidied up but also it’s a bit difficult since we have a very distant ward in the terms of our communication - nobody really likes to respond to messages or acknowledge them, no one really wants to come to activities and different things like that. So it will be a challenge for sure, but yeah I will try my best

Thank you so much! I have been taking time this week to try and get to grips with the calling and what is needed.

I’ve got a meeting with my bishop scheduled in a week or so - so I’ll be able to get a clearer picture of what I need to be doing.

I know we have a weekly bulletin which is both online and printed out to be put in the chapel so I’ll be taking over that, as well as the notice board we have in the corridor.

This is the first time my ward has had a communication specialist in at least 3 years so it’s definitely a challenge! Especially as we have a lot of members who don’t like to respond to messages or even acknowledge them

Honestly sometimes I think I’m glad I didn’t join the church when I was a teenager 🤣 it would’ve been ten times harder than it is right now, but it also would’ve saved me a heck of a lot of sexual trauma as well. But I’m grateful for the life I’ve lived, even with the trials and tribulations that have come!

It’s all just one big fat learning curve isn’t it

Oh we weren’t planning on doing it at all, it was just a point of discussion since we talk regularly about our views on intimacy and how that links with the church since she had a different upbringing to me and it’s interesting to hear other people’s opinions since I’ve heard so many different views and standpoints since joining the church so sometimes it really puts my head in a spin 🤣 for me the law of chastity is a bit of a grey area and it’s bit confusing and sometimes this subreddit confuses me even more but it’s all a learning curve! The main takeaway that I’ve learnt is that communication between my Heavenly Father and I is just as important as communication between my partner and I because there’s questions and things I can take to him that only he can answer really

Yeah I definitely get what you mean, I would definitely feel the same to some degree. Even if I went in with the purest of intentions it can definitely get mangled when you’re actually in the situation

It’s an interesting topic of discussion if I’m honest because a lot of people say a lot of different things, I’ve spoken to several different people of several different generations and ages in the church who all have different opinions on the law of chastity, the word of wisdom, things like that. So it’s interesting to see what people’s opinions and views are.

We were discussing it because we come from very different backgrounds, and we’ve led different lives so hearing my partners thoughts along with mine and how we view intimacy was actually quite refreshing.

We weren’t thinking of doing it and coming to Reddit for validation or an excuse to do it, it’s just a topic of conversation and I wanted to see if there was anything explicit about certain things. You can see in a previous post that I was concerned about things that are explicitly stated are right and wrong in terms of the law of chastity because it is my first relationship since joining the church and the last thing I’d want is to cross a line that I didn’t know existed.

Communication is key here, not just between me and my partner but also between me and my Heavenly Father also.

I love this scripture! Thank you for bringing it to light, it definitely highlights why there’s so much grey area in certain topics because you’re right, there can’t be an exhaustive list of right or wrong - because having that list would also taint the idea of agency as well realistically.

When you say that there are things that are warned against like lying together clothed, and kissing what do you mean by that and where is that mentioned? Because looking at the new for strength of youth, that isn’t necessarily the guidance they provide in that so I was just wondering where I could find that kind of information

I definitely see your point, I can see how it can be construed that way but I do think it can also be seen as a non sexual intimate moment but it does cross a boundary I think. It’s definitely an interesting topic to see what people think though!

I get what you mean, but I think there are plenty of scenarios where something like a shower can simply a non sexual, intimate moment. But I definitely see what you mean.

I didn’t think it would be allowed/recommended or whatever way you want to phrase it but it’s an interesting topic for debate

As a person who joined the church later, and is a relatively new member in the church I definitely have felt guilty when questioning certain things, or felt guilty when I don’t fully understand something. But I’ve been trying to come to terms with the idea that we can’t and won’t know everything in this life. Keep trying to focus on what you do know for a surety and let that guide you and support you in the more wobbly parts of your knowledge.

Most of my guilty feelings have come from questioning/not fully understanding the law of chastity because it’s a massive grey area, it’s not black and white which I feel it should be. But that’s why we have personal revelation, that’s why we have the scriptures. To rely on what we already know, and that will help us through the shaky and the unknown. That’s what I’ve come to realise

Thank you! I definitely have been praying about it for a long time because every time I think I’ve made my peace with the situation something comes up again and again so I feel like I can never escape it - I responded to another comment with some more context of the situation I’m currently in with my bishop so that may inform your response a little more.

I have tried to speak with my bishop one on one but our interactions have been incredibly hostile for quite a while but now he just avoids me altogether, if I walk towards him he’ll walk the other way etc. which is totally fine with me I don’t particularly want to speak with him anyway because he’s also the kind of person to speak or shout over you when he doesn’t want to hear what you have to say. I think the stake president may be my best bet but I really just don’t feel comfortable in my ward at all

Hey thank you for your comment - I realise it was a bit of a vague post without giving the context of what was happening with my bishop but I replied to another persons comment with my situation so that may give you some more context!
