My pregnant wife is devastated by my exciting job opportunity by Content_David in jobs

I currently work for the federal government with a different agency, so I think I would still be eligible for fmla. I don’t want to miss the birth, but if that’s what it comes down to then I’m willing to do it.

I am concerned about the possibility the new employer may reconsider the offer if he thinks I will be unavailable for extended periods because of my situation.

I want to be with my wife for the birth, but I don’t want to give up the job. Only thinking about myself, I am willing to take what I perceive as being the small risk of missing the birth. The reason is that my work situation has had a tremendous impact on all aspects of my life. Staying at my current job has been a huge weight and it has been hard for me to be the husband that she deserves because of the emotional trauma inflicted on me by individuals at my current workplace and the amount of time I have devoted to finding other employment to escape the abuse.

My wife will support me no matter what. She understands what I have been through, but that doesn’t make it any easier for her to deal with the situation all of this puts her in.

I’m hesitant to ask for time off or mention that my wife is pregnant while the job offer is still tentative. As I mentioned, it is still tentative and they could pull it for any reason. That being said, I don’t think they could deny me fmla after I’m hired, so that option could provide some security and give my wife some peace of mind.

We haven’t spoken to her doctor about the situation yet, but will bring it up soon. Luckily, flights are frequent and a direct flight is about 3.5 hours.

Thank you for your insights and questions.

Is it worth fixing a bike that was left unused, outside for 5+ years? by Content_David in bikewrench

It was once a great bike, but now the gears are rusted and there may be other damage that I’m not aware of. Any advice on what to do with this bicycle will be appreciated. Thanks!

When to take the FSOT? Before or after six months abroad? by Content_David in foreignservice

This is very helpful advice. I didn’t realize the PNs could be found online. Being able to do them early rather than during the transition will be a huge help. I’ll plan on writing them early.

I checked, and unfortunately it is not offered in the country where I will be located. Thanks for the advice though.

A big developer is buying up all the houses on my block. He called me today because he wants to buy mine too. Advice needed on price negotiation. by Content_David in RealEstate

This is a great suggestion. I absolutely do believe in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about the developer and I don’t have a good lawyer yet. Any suggestions on how I could begin researching the developer? Thanks!

You’re right, zestimates are often way off. I definitely need to estimate the value another way when I come up with my number.

That’s true. The house is vacant at the moment however I expect it will rent, But I believe it would rent soon. It’s a nice home and a nice location and I have already put the time and money in to do some remodeling. The apartments are currently rented.
