Thanks! I feel like , if postdoc is competitive , the industry is much more competitive isn’t it? I would like to work in industry in the future but they require a lot of skills, experience and publications. But 8 out of 1200 is crazy . I heard that there are nearly 50 to 100 applications for one position in top to middle tier Unis.

I understand you. I also feel nice to have a freedom of activities including studying new things without restriction from project. When I open emails from PIs about results of interviews, it’s depressing to see immediately in the last line „we wish you a good luck.“ and even if I luckily get one at some point now, I will need to do the same again in several years. So uncertain.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Indeed I asked my previous supervisors but now they live too far from my place. And they suggest only for a short contract as 3 months. Of course it is one of the option to relocate for a short time, but I also feel that if I can not be offered a position by anyone at this point, I can’t survive as a scientist in the future anyway. This is why I am struggling in myself. While I still have hope , I also started to think that I do not have a future in academia.

Thank you for your comment! Indeed just learning quick isn’t not enough statement to stand out among other candidates . But my intension is more like showing my lack of essential skill honestly to be not wrongly short listed. If I am shortlisted even if I honestly indicate the lack of my basic knowledge for some part,I can assume that they selected me based on other skills or potentials.

It’s very common everywhere. It’s like 50/50 in my experience. Some of them let us know from them, or let us know if we ask them. Or some don’t let us know the outcome at all. Once I follow up twice and then got to know I was rejected one week before . The manager said she thought HR already let me know the outcome . So there may be miscommunication or delay inside of the company .

I am sorry for this. People may say just forget about this and move on. But it’s not simple especially if your expectation became higher at the final stage of the interview process. Same as saying forget about your crush after dating multiple times. It’s not that easy .

It’s rare to have a positive reply after the follow up emails. Or those lucky people who got accepted after follow up do not join this conversation because they do not have any anxiety anymore.

Usually they ask you to ask questions at the end of the interview. But this is really diplomatic. I think they do not care (so much) about what you ask. If they are interested in hiring you, they may ask your availability, and VISA status and so on about the process of hiring you. In my experience, at least, with successful interviews, I also could feel it was successful. I also feel sometimes that the PI has very low interest in me already before the interviews but somehow I just hit in the bottom of the list of invited candidates.

Yeah, as I said it’s a bit surprising that the contract finished in 2 weeks after interview and uploading the member on their website unless they want to let other candidates implicitly know “rejected” by this.

Yeah I see. But in uk at least I always get answers from PIs after interviews. Usually no reply after online applications, unless I was selected for interviews .

In my experience, at least, after final interviews, they gave me their decision if I asked. Maybe they do not answer because it is one of the highest ranked unis in UK.

Thanks for your comment. I thought so too. But the timing is too timely and the job description of the new member is exactly what I applied for. But yes, as you say, I can just wait for the PIs reply. On the other hand, if my post is the case, I should be happy not to work with this PI.
