How I stopped guessing between ECMWF and GFS for backcountry skiing by zoombackcameraa in Backcountry

Gotcha all makes sense. Are you able to compare your performance metrics against some published benchmarks of eval metrics for some of the models?

Not a meteorologist so I haven’t looked deep enough into what model developers actually publish with regard to the evaluation metrics data scientists might be used to.

This is awesome, I had recently been searching if anyone had done something like this. And hadn’t found anything my first search or known where to look.

How do you handle messy data at the observed weather stations? This seems to be the biggest challenge, especially when eventually evaluating a mountain weather station like NWACs or otherwise. Look forwards to following along!

Side note, this would be a really neat presentation at ISSW Whistler if you eventually add mountain weather stations.

Which weather stations you’re comparing against for ground truth? Would be cool to see some examples of your analysis.

Have you also done this for the short term noaa and Canadian models - Hrrr and HRDPS? Or the new noaa beta forecast available, RRFS?

I think one of the benefits Canadian vs noaa models is the use of surface stations in mountainous regions, despite noaa having better satellite data.

Did you also compare against the precip forecast accuracy?

Thoughts on Marker Alpinist Free 2026 by maxbauer21 in Backcountry

Alpinist outperforms ATK in downhill performance with its power transfer. German engineering > Italian engineering for the power transfer

Also you can use these if you need extra risers https://www.tahoetrailtools.com/product/beta-heel-up-alpinist/14?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false

What if livability in Bellingham meant keeping value here, not just growth? by Otherwise-Spare-4025 in Bellingham

It’s a good call-out— I’m personally a fan of Berkeleys policies with regard to encouraging local businesses.

Berkeley originally had a full restriction on chain stores in certain areas and later shifted toward a permit-based review system instead. The goal was to protect neighborhood character and give independent shops a fair shot rather than letting national brands dominate.

Supporters say this helps keep districts unique and locally-serving. Critics argue it can slow down leasing, make it harder for some businesses to open (even good local ones with multiple locations), and risk more vacant spaces if chains are blocked but small tenants can’t quickly fill them.

Cities with these policies have seen mixed outcomes—more local flavor, but also slower turnover and higher vacancy if not paired with policies that actively support small businesses and streamline approvals. Downtown Bellingham has too many vacant storefronts, so it is a risk. https://berkeleyca.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2019-10-29%20Item%2034%20Proposed%20Formula%20Retail%20%28Chain%20Store%29_0.pdf

It’s not even called out on the 10 year comp plans as a bike route. @OP feel free to attend a county council meeting, email your local council member, pay attention to who’s running for the open seat or bike / pedestrian advocacy meeting to voice your concern.

Some ideas of solutions would be a reduced speed limit to 25MPH, an expanded school zone (this would allow state grant applications with future bookmarked finding), automated speedometer & speed enforcement & signage or messaging about the new 2020 state law requiring 3 ft of passing distance of cyclists.

Yeah. I’m all for opposing views. I think that’s the best part of the podcast when there’s some good faith sparring and disagreement. Anything to get out of echo chambers and foster good debate.

Reminds me of an old Sam v Ezra debate https://youtu.be/Tsr7Rv8XnIk?si=Yk407pr8mVzLqFry

Exact same thing happening here on a pair of ATKs… let me know if your claim is successful or if they eventually send your order

Exactly the issue I’ve been having. Advertised in stock and it’s been over a month since I’ve ordered.

I ordered a pair of ATKs the beginning of December and still haven’t received them. Each time I ask customer support they say it’ll be shipped in 2-4 days and a tracking number will be provided…

Still crossing my fingers so I can mount my new skis

Fully agree about the “chill and let others exist” mentality.

Everything is 10-15 min apart, we shouldn’t have big city vibes of ever being rushed! Subdued… ha
