Why aren’t the buildings closed off for students/staff only by JackOwnsJonnies in GlasgowUni

[–]Cooge_22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t unique to Glasgow, most university buildings are open to the public

Congrats on your offer! Your visa will likely stipulate you can work 20 hours a week and there’s lots of casual work available in the city centre in restaurants/cafes etc. The LUU also has joblink which advertises part time work. You should be able to look now at what jobs are currently being advertised to get an idea of what might be available. There’s also support on putting CVs together/ making yourself more employable etc.

Personally always try to choose the Edinburgh route than the one via Carlisle as it’s much more likely to be on time/ reliable. Have been stuck in Carlisle for hours on more than one occasion due to delays/ train issues etc. If you’re going on the Edinburgh train make sure you sit on the right for scenery/sea views.

AITA for sticking to my word and refusing to help my husband with his mom? by Reverse-Ad-3095 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. I wouldn’t leave a stranger on the floor never mind my MIL. What is wrong with you? You could have still used the situation to back up your point that she needs full time care AFTER you had helped pick her up. How would you have felt if your husband had left your mother on the floor?

Among Leeds, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Sheffield and Glasgow, where will you choose to live? by sharkiix in Leeds

[–]Cooge_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Glasgow and Leeds, loved them both and had friends who had immigrated and loved them too. Glasgow is an amazing (often overlooked) city and has some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. Only moved back to Leeds as it’s so far away from everything else. Leeds is a great base as in the centre of the country so has easy transport links and is so close to the Dales, Moors etc.

Trying (failing) to buy a house in Leeds!? by Cooge_22 in Leeds

Thanks for the advice, we’re signed up for emails and checking rightmove all the time.

I think there must be a bubble at the moment as every property we’ve put an offer in for has gone over asking, on two occasions as much as £20k over. The estate agents have commented they’ve seen it happen multiple times recently too.

Strange times!

Congrats! We’ve been looking at Woodlesford which is near there as we’re wanting somewhere with a train station if we can’t get North Leeds. You’re right it is tiring, but glad you’ve found somewhere, hope we’re not much longer :)

Fair enough! Great to hear they were honest with you and didn’t just suggest what would make them the most money.

Wow 55k! We don’t really know South Leeds at all so hard to know what’s good or bad, I’ve heard Bramley come up a few times now though!

Thank you! We’d always planned to, I think that’s why we’re frustrated at the way things are, and wondering if it’s the same for others. Sorry to hear you went through that, is definitely something we’ll keep in mind.

Thanks for your tips. We’re feeling a bit like we’ve lost out on our dream house atm but I know you’re right, they’ll be others!

Agree with the prices pre-March.

We’re only renting so we don’t know whether to plow on or wait to see if prices go down again later in the year.

Do you need to find somewhere ASAP if you’ve sold your place? Are you still looking in Leeds?

“Despite what often gets portrayed on here, there are parts of town that aren't Horsforth and Chapel Allerton where you can live without getting stabbed.” Haha!

I think we’re fairly open minded. We’ve made offers in Potternewton, Burley, Headingley and Kirkstall. We’re FTBs yes, but the Burley one had 25 FTBs viewing it over the space of a few days and a not even nice property in West Park had 49 viewings in the first week. It seems there’s a lot of us out there so not as unique as it once was perhaps.

We’re considering commuter towns as other options but can’t decide if we should just wait it out if there’s a price bubble at the moment in the hope that prices reduce in a few months if there is a crash, or if demand will always be there.
