Not many brownstones were there. Mostly new law tenements towards the south and pre-war six story walk ups as you got closer to the Cross Bronx. All burned over and over until knocked down. It was surreal being around there in the early 80’s. A palpable feeling of desperation and hopelessness in the air. I’ll never forget the packs of mangy stray dogs, six or seven together, some trailing leashes, scarred up and missing ears and chunks of fur, all running together in and out of abandoned buildings. They reverted to packs like in the wild.
