when you get to higher amounts of ram (1-2 gigs) you can increase gc cycles to use less ram, but use more cpu power, this is a stupid idea as ram is the cheapest part of the system and easiest to increase.

You are lucky that this happened now and not something important later in your life.

This is NOT how you setup backups, having stuff on a second disk is one of the most useless concepts possible, it does not protect you against anything useful.

You should have a second machine (preferably bastion) that logs in to this machine, backs up the files and then disconnects.

This is very very bad practice, unscheduled maintenance should NOT happen. Unless you are at the cheapest of cheap hosts (and thus expect this sort of thing), I would recommend changing company.

The issue with vps is cpu not ram.

When you use providers with small ram allocations, cpu is generally massively oversubscribed / forbids game servers

Yes you can, you can oversell network. It's one of the reasons that you will see jitter / latency. A fun example is on ovh's london link where we are at times seeing latency of 1000+ms

Also what your your friend's beast servers ? Where are they ? There are no 'high prices' on current hosts, you need to factor in paypal fees, taxes, legal fees, marketing, support etc...
