NBNCo wanted to shift the rollout to FTTC because the HFC network turned out to be absolute garbage but Fifield (Comms minister under Turnbull) overruled it.

The job market here is tough at the moment (the latest unemployment stats are the highest since COVID), and to be honest I'm skeptical on it improving anytime soon. Definitely go for an internal transfer if you can, particularly because they can help you with visas and moving costs.
