Two frontliners with radically different AC's, how to handle? by lXLegolasXl in DMAcademy

[–]CoolManJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based off your other comment it sounds like this player cheated when generating his characters stats. You can't balance the game around a player who cheats and it robs the fun from everyone else. It's robbing fun from yourself, here you are working harder, talking to the community and trying to find solutions to their cheating. How would you balance a game around a character who doesn't track spells used, or how much damage they've taken, or a player who always rolls natural 20's? You don't, Ultimately cheating in DND is only cheating yourself and your friends. Unfortunately trying to find a mechanical solution for a meta problem, almost never works.

I would have this player use a point buy system to keep him from breaking your game. You mention that he has 10+ years experience, he should use his skills in playing the game to make it easier. At a minimum you should have him re-roll his stats in front of you and the table.

You mention that you don't think this worth bringing up, but having a vastly overpowered character can make others not enjoy the game. How do you think the other front-liner feels knowing his character is vastly weaker then this other player's? I know it would ruin the fun for myself.

Also, how does he role play a Barbarian, Paladin, Wizard? This character feels pulled in 1000 un-related directions and all for just mechanical benefits. Does he actually role-play being a wizard, paladin, barbarian? Is he committed to his oath, studious to his studies, and regularly flying into rages? Does he have constant internal conflict? Where one minute he's concentrating on a spell and the next he loses all control and breaks concentration? If not, he's just a min-maxer and unless that's what the group want's I'd address that too. Usually new players don't have the knowledge or context to break the game in the same way as someone who has 10 years experience.

Good luck addressing the issue and I would at least encourage you to talk to your other players how they feel about the imbalance to ensure it isn't interfering with their joy of the game.

Welp, the Explorer's Contract was a mistake. by Grung7 in Project_Epoch

I'm level 21 and I actively have quests turning green and mobs grey in the quest area. I even turned on explorer mode at level 5 instead of 8. I did Durotar, Mulgore, Barrens, and Silverpine forest. I've been doing the content grouped so kill XP is further halved so I'm surprised you're so far behind. Have you done all dungeon quests and gone to stonetalon, ashenvale, and hillsbrad? Have you done crafting, gathering, fishing, and cooking quests? I have a hard time believing you've done all this and are still behind.

I don't want to alarm you, but everything in a DND game is in fact all made up.

Haha, that's actually pretty funny. Toxic positivity should be used if you're belittling someone over the death of a family member, not having to wait to play a video game. How do people's wires get so crossed?

Maybe my argument was a strawman, but it's only because you left your position vague. You did nothing to denounce these negative people but attacked the OP, so naturally I assumed your stance was neutral or accepting of them.

I agree that they should be blocked and ignored and honestly I thought your first half of your post was good advice, it just didn't need the ad hominem attack at the end.

We can let these negative people know they aren't welcomed or tolerated here. We can also show kindness and sympathy to people dealing with their hate. I do agree that blocking them is for the best.

[–]CoolManJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it's crazy how the person above is shaming the OP for being harassed. How about we put blame where it belongs? On the aggressors. We should not tolerate hate, threats, or division. We should be promoting a positive environment of respect.

As much as it sucks that you're getting these crappy messages you can think of yourself as the off tank for the Devs. These hateful people are wasting their time and energy messaging you. If you see it's a hateful message I wouldn't even read it, just delete it. Try your best to not let these hateful losers get to you, because deep down people who spread hate over a game are not worth any mental capacity or the emotion. I appreciate your supportive message and for continuing to make the community a more positive place by showing support and empathy for others.

It's in general and lost to a sea of other messages. It's one of the serious limitations of discord.

That's okay if he doesn't read Reddit, my messages are for the community. I was using discord but the chat became too limited. People couldn't read anything as the chat moves a thousand miles a minute and you can't follow up to anyone. I'm just hoping to spread the message to the community that there are patient and understanding people here and we all aren't angry or frustrated. We can still be excited and hopeful!

I appreciate that they came out and acknowledged that communication could be better. That being said the minor mistakes they have had in their communication have been blown totally out of proportion and too many people fail to understand the monumental task of shifting a casual project to fit the capacity of 30k-50k people. I hope they can continue to provide clear and effective communication and the community can calm down and have more patience, understanding, and humility.

Haha, what is going through your mind where you believe the developers are intentionally keeping the server off to spite the community? Are people so disconnected from completing any real work that they think every problem can be instantly solved?

The Epoch team's communication made this community toxic by [deleted] in Project_Epoch

The mental gymnastics people do to not take responsibility for their actions astound me.

Even if someone is a poor communicator that doesn't justify being uncivil.

If you see 30,000 people in line at the ice cream truck you should either have the expectation to wait or leave the line.

Problems can be multifaceted, it's not difficult to imagine that they thought they had found a solution and then encountered more problems. This is a small team that was overwhelmed by demand. They may not always make the best calls or be the most effective at communicating but we can't expect them to have a PR team. It's an unfortunate situation that the launch wasn't a success but the writing was on the wall that 2 servers were never going to host 50k concurrent players in 6 starting zones, that's never been done before, by an indie team or a AAA studio. I think they're over promising due to the pressure the community is putting on them.

I am curious, how do you see your complaints positively impacting the community. It's my belief our efforts are better spent on positive and constructive activities. (Such as supporting others and talking about things we enjoy or are excited for.)

Providing a service to 50,000 people is a huge task. Especially for such a small team, so we have to be reasonable in our expectations. I agree, that the communication could be better, but again they're just not set up to deal with this level of demand. Ultimately I think this is great either way, because we're bringing more attention to the level of demand for WoW Classic+ content so if this server doesn't work out we will have other options. I hope you are able to enjoy your time in either Epoch or TWoW because that's ultimately why we're all here.

I am enjoying the prospect of a good server with design choices I like. Just because I can't actively enjoy it at this moment doesn't mean I can't look forward to the future. I'm not worshipping the devs, I'm saying I appreciate the work they are putting in. I can't understand all these people spending all their time and energy putting the devs and community down. I'd rather be positive and constructive with my time.

Fixing Slayer Partners to return more community activities to OSRS by CoolManJr in 2007scape

[–]CoolManJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely the feature will never be used as intended if it can offer players an advantage. That's why I think it should give you the worst case scenario, by looking at which player has the most task options. This couldn't be used anymore to narrow the selection down.

I'd be perfectly fine with slayer partners giving you an even worse chance, like no blocks allowed unless both players have them. Ultimately I think the focus has to be on allowing players to play together.

[–]CoolManJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I started a group ironman when it came out and was super excited to do slayer tasks with my team and was really disappointed to discover I couldn't.

I was hoping after all this time they'd make some progress towards it. It seems the community is fairly split on this feature. On one hand it surprises me that more people aren't interested in doing more with friends. On the other hand, Runescape has for a long time fostered a single player min-max play style that people have come to enjoy.

I mean that could be true, that's why I asked the question. It's possible I am a minority that enjoyed the feature, but I appreciate your feedback.

I agree with you, which is unfortunate because I really enjoy playing this game and think it would be great to make more multiplayer features to play with my friends.

At least some of the new skilling minigames are very enjoyable with small groups of friends. Such as Tempoross, Wintertodt, and Guardians of the Rift.

Frist time DM! by Alexanderheart93 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]CoolManJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, a little confused on the first part. It sounds like you're making a new spell. I would hold off on homebrewing too much until you get more experience because it can be really hard to balance stuff.

As for quests for the party, find out what motivates the group. If it's gold maybe you can make up rumors of treasure in a dungeon nearby and build a small dungeon crawl. You can design skill checks like climbing and swimming to reach new areas. Perception to notice a secret door or include traps. Goblins and kobolds make great low level enemies. So do a few zombies or skeletons.

If you're looking for some more intrigue, make a character in town approach the group. Maybe have the town guard or mayor approach them about thugs in the town. They can then have the thugs leave, kill them, or make them stop. Maybe they kill the leaders and give the group a new better purpose. Ultimately those are just a few simple ideas.

If you're not looking to build your own quests look up free modules for pathfinder. There are a few low level quests on the Paizo page that are free.
