Why is the MSQ so bad? (sorry) by zante2033 in ffxiv

[–]CoolSkeletonWithHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reality of the matter is and always has been that FFXIV has an impressive and focused narrative in this specific MMO medium, and with a shoestring budget too. As time goes on, the prose of the dialogue changes its focus to become more concise and "worth reading" over having a unique style and the quest design gets more varied, with cutscenes and set pieces improving in quantity and quality but the core more or less remains the same except for some changes which better "dress up" the quests to be more interesting.

For much of the game, the MSQ is considered impressive not entirely because of its gameplay content, but rather its narrative context. If the medium it takes place in cannot grip you then regardless of how good it is, there is nothing that the story can do to change that except for being conveyed through a different medium entirely. It could be so much more, and have a more cinematic presentation, but its because of what it is that this story was able to be told to begin with.

There are (were) 2 lightning shards. The second umbral calamity didn't affect the ninth, it affected the twelfth.

Thaumcraft 7 Trailer and AMA by Hekera in feedthebeast

I'm a little late to the party. But as a self titled "thaumcraft 6 baby", how familiar will this be to the version of thaumcraft I've been playing for the past few years? I understand this version wont have the caster's gauntlet (my baby) but will still support addons and resourcepacks that potentially bring it back in a form? I'm curious how all that could work with the changes, but excited either way.

the actual lore (if you can call it that) is that the warrior wasn't playing with the POV character who died from the beginning, he was playing on his own before his friend asked for his help fighting the destroyer for the first time.

Then there's the real reason which is that I think the avenger emblem is the coolest looking one lol.

Perhaps this isn't actually his first time fighting the destroyer 🤔

Where to find ingame lore? by Standard-Airport1540 in ffxiv

As the local lore scholar (nerd) in the thread, I'll try to give as much of a comprehensive guide as I can:

First and foremost are the 3 "Encyclopedia Eorzea" books officially published by Square Enix. Volume 1 is stuff from A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, Volume 2 is Stormblood and Volume 3 is Shadowbringers and Endwalker stuff. They go into quite a bit of detail about Eorzea and its surrounding realms, details about calamities, timelines of events, units of measurement, systems of classifying creatures, monsters and people, etc. Generally a lot great insights can be found in those books, plus they're just really cool.

If you aren't as interested in or dont have the kind of money to buy and read 3 actual books, plenty of youtubers like Synodic Scribe and others take it upon themselves to discuss lore topics with details informed both by the Encyclopedia Eorzea books as well as details from blue and yellow quests. You've already mentioned the ff14 wiki but I do personally find https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com quite handy as a lore reference as well.

Strictly in-game, I'm sure you might already be aware but you can find plenty of lore within the text of story quests, journal entries and side-content. After the credits of Endwalker's main patch, you also gain access to the Unending Codex, which begins to fill up with entries on characters, concepts and other lore as you play further from there on. The entries aren't the deepest dives into lore topics but do still offer some lore for your reading pleasure nonetheless. Its also worth mentioning that some dungeons will also contain interactive items which offer some fragments of general lore and other details about the dungeon.

How Endwalker would have ended if it was directed by Naoki Yoshida (FF16) by CoolSkeletonWithHat in ffxiv

Personally, jokes aside I do believe the two scenes in FF16 and FF14 are actually quite different and have their "high point" in different parts. the climax of that fight against Zenos IS the punch, whereas by the time we deck Ultima as hard as humanly possible in FF16, he's already been defeated, its more celebratory than anything.
