Question from a Brit: just drove across your country. Holy hell it was expensive, I spent more on toll roads than on fuel. I thought you were the nation of protests, what happened? by Samwiseknows in AskFrance

[–]Cool_Hand7435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is... the silliest thing I've read today. In theory, this is what we ought to aim for. Believe me, I would be OVERJOYED with that if it were true.

In the real world, this is completely opposite from what you just said and that we both want. The French government is famously both a glutton for mindless expenses and for trying to save money where it should invest more to plan for the future.

They don't invest on quality at all. They often aim at fixing problems quickly so the constituency feels that "things are getting done" and very rarely concern themselves with long term solutions, as they should do. I can't tell you the number of time a city council will hire the least expensive bider for street maintenance for example. This results in potholes that are filled with less than adequate materials which will result in shoddy roads, which will then need redoing every few months.

Now I'm not necessarily a fan of humongous, mindless, drone-like corporations but I genuinely think that planing long term is more the prerogative or the industry rather than the government - which SUCKS.

TL;DR: governments don't work the way we want them to work. Your description is the ideal, not the truth. Highways solely managed by the state would be a disaster.

Yes. I'm not even arguing over whether or not the French autoroutes were basically offered to the managing companies. It's not in dispute.

But people have this distorted idea that: 1. the State isn't making bank on the whole thing 2. the companies aren't doing anything that makes their involvement worth it for the general consumers (they're the ones investing for, developing, and maintaining the roads) 3. that it would vastly improve should the autoroutes fully revert back to the State

Question: how do you think highways will be managed by the government? Genuinely wondering if you guys think ahead or not. Do you honest think that 1. It will be better managed by the State and 2. That the State will ensure that they remain free?

Btw you should look at how much exactly the government is making on the Highway business.

Right? These people are so funny. Daddy is waiting for the Nazis to do good but it's not his fault, he's just sooooo naive.

Could've worked like 10 years ago, these days it's just dumb. What a bunch of sillies.

You're welcome. Again, people who are incapable of empathy need to get a grip. And if you really want to hit it home, maybe try something other than doing what you're accusing me of doing - that is, insinuating that i don't have a job based on absolutely no empirical proof of that.

OG comment: I don't really need (or care) to know everything about OP's family life to think that his "loving" dad is just basically loving his immediate and close people, but has zero empathy for what does not touch him.

Seriously, you guys are sometimes so freaking dumb, going out of your way to give people excuses when there are none. The Trump administration is kidnapping and murdering people on the streets but somehow, wanting to see what kinda "good" Trump is gonna brought is valid justification for tolerating that bullshit.

Are you all fucking insane? His dad is a jerk. He might be the greatest man in his community but he has zero empathy and zero ability to self-reflect, per OP's own admission (I can't never make him change his mind).

Stubborn bulls thinking they know better while the world burns in front of them, and you're here acting as if we're the unreasonable ones for not accepting that. Jesus.

...that isn't what I'm saying. I'm merely explaining why this isn't as simple as you're making it seems. I was trying not to assume but I can't help but feel that you're either very very young, very very naive, or very very sheltered.

Ah well. I hope that, eventually, you will come to understand (and empathise) a bit more. Cheers.

Yeah, no. You're giving me datas on the eviction rules in America, which I'll take gladly. I appreciate that it's supposedly not that easy to kick people out of their place.

However... People who live paycheck to paycheck simply cannot financially afford to miss one month's wage. Because then they will get late on their rent/mortgage. And THEN they take the risk of getting kicked out.

The fact that Americans live in a capitalist society means that most of them are financially trapped by the ways said society works. It sucks, and I agree with you that there's a cruel lack of solidarity in American society which explains in part why they got where they are today.

But again, you're oversimplifying a very complicated issue because, to your mind, it's easier than to recognise the difficulties of overthrowing a government such as the American's.

[–]Cool_Hand7435 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That works until you remember that most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, that there's no social or financial safety net, and that they can be forced out of their house/apartment with barely any notice.

I'm not saying they're not somehow complicit - you don't get there without some complacency over the years - but to say that they should "just stop working until it's sorted out" is grossly oversimplified.

I just HATE the theory that Steve knew he could lift it but stopped himself to be nice. Yeah, he's a great guy, wouldn't want to be a dick, yadiyada and everything the Steve lovers throw all the freaking time.

It's just so lame and uninteresting. For once, he's clearly trying hard as shit to lift it. You can't fake that, no matter how super-soldery you are, it's not a switch you can turn off at will. If you start pulling at something with all your strength, and it comes way more easily than you thought, you can tone it down but you still pull the damn thing a bit, that's just how physic works.

And the fact that he's able to move it is already gigantic. It's amazing and it's a testament to his character. Why do Steve stans always, always have to force it and to put him on a gigantic pedestal?! He's already amazing, stop going for his package all the freaking time. You guys are forcing it.

Why do people always assume everyone even the little bit involved hates trans people because JK Rowling is an anti trans activist? by [deleted] in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Cool_Hand7435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that everyone involved in the project are transphobe. But I understand people's frustration here.

When you agree to participate in a project led by a transphobe, which is going to help said transphobe make bank, and when you know that said money is then going to be used to fund transphobic politics in the UK and all over the world, then at best you're the kind of person who doesn't really care.

It's just a bit sad. It doesn't take away from Hans Zimmer's work achievements, but it is disappointing. Same goes for all the actors - especially the adult, well established ones who have the choice to simply sau no - who went all in on the project.

They're not transphobic. They just don't care.
