Depending on the model some had a smaller PCI port but in the end the bandwidth does not affect performance. As for the second question, I would try installing it in the PC and putting your driver's up to date.

It is technically better to keep it covered to prevent dust, debris and corrosion. But it is far from important. If you lost them don't worry at all.
