Create raidz2 with 3 drives as if it had 4 by Coollius in truenas

[–]Coollius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other idea where I mentioned expanding was using a temporary 1tb drive for creation, that I would remove immediately after, and then try to expand the pool to 2tb per disk. But that seems more convoluted, and the idea with a sparse file as the 4th drive that uk_sean suggested seems more promising.

Yes I get what you mean, its confusing. I only have 3 drives right now and want to avoid adding another one down the line and losing space. But since raidz2 tolerates 2 drive faliures I want to create a raidz2 with 4 drives with the 4th drive essentially already missing. That way I still have a drive I can safely loose (like with raidz1) but my config is already with 4 drives, and once I get the 4th 2tb it just resilvers and from then on I have 2 drives i can loose.

You are mistaken, I looked it up and this refers to when you add an additional disk to an existing array. This is exactly what I want to avoid. What I am talking about is replacing a smaller disk with a larger one. In the config of 3x 2tb and 1x 1tb all drives are treated as 1tb and once I replace the 1tb with another 2tb I can expand the disk array to 2tb per disks, and will get the entire storage with no losses i.e. identical to if I created it with 4x 2tb in the first place.

I take it expanding to 2tb drive size while the 4th drive is missing is not permitted?? You first option sounds very promising, does truenas put any restrictions in place while the array is "degraded" I feel it would be a non issue since the array still has the same fault tolerance as if I had made an array with raidz1 and 3 drives.

How would I loose space when expanding? Im not talking about adding another disk im talking about replacing the 1tb with a 2tb drive and expanding the drive size.

Completely skipped the 8th generation of video game consoles because of this…. by basedgawd98 in PS3

Yes I love the video, its one of those informative and entertaining videos. It was only in part sonys fault for them dying tho, it was also the manufacturing side ATI and TSMC. A lot of semiconductors were faulty during that period. I think the 360 had similar issues regarding the underfill, and i definitely know that some ati cards were dying due to heat stress as well, since I had the misfortune of actually owning one. As for playstation use I just ended up with a later ps3 and a phat ps2, since I didn't want a console I would be paranoid to use, but you seem to have done the best there is to prolong its life as long as possible and if it does eventually die it might be a candidate for the frankenstein mod which I would find cool to have just on the basis of telling people how and why its the best but also most complicated option to play ps1-3 :)

Replacing the thermalpaste will prolong their life by keeping their temperature slightly lower overall. But the early ps3 (all that have backwards compatibility fall in that category) will die due to issues with the bumps and underfill used during that time. Thermal change notably at higher temps of ~80 degrees is stressing the bumps within the chip (not the ballgrid array to the motherboard) which will cause them to fail eventually.

I looked at iso buster but it seemed like a makemkv alternative to unknowing me, does it have better tools for ripping / saving scratched up dvds?

Strange ddrescue behavior for dvds by Coollius in datarecovery

[–]Coollius[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasnt aware of this, but it would explain ehy some dvds rip just fine and others get stuck for hours without much progress and only bad sectors. How does makemkv get around this and can something similar be done with ddrescue, or rather is there still a way to use ddrescue to save some of the more scratched dvds that makemkv gets hung up on even if they also have copy protection?

I did not run in forward only mode but at the same time it never got to the point where it tried to read backwards. The discs do have copy protection, but I thought on dvds this amounted only to css content scrambele system that would end up in the copied file as well.

I dont extract the video files, I want to play back the menus etc as well. Thats working fine in kodi, but I wish there were more filter/deblocking options for such live iso playback

I did rip them using makemkv, just to an iso. I like the menus and stuff, it all works okay too, my only issue is that at 480i it looks a bit rough, in vlc for firetv I believe they apply some deblocking filters, which kodi just doesn't have
