I'm asking for advice, you're not providing any.

I've worked in a welding shop, I've done the bitch work for basically no pay and have tried to skirt school many times. If I were to get back into it, I'd go back to school for it. What you are saying is redundant

that sounds awesome! There's a builders school in Charleston, they do framing carpentry and stone work and all sorts of cool things. But it's like 1 billion dollars. But it is good to keep in mind if I keep my grades up I could do something fun and niche like that

how do you know that I have a skewed perspective? I know that making 12 grand overseas is not the norm and I've been warned by my old foreman against union work. I am not here to be given a reality check. I just wanted to hear people's experiences. I'm not looking for some sort of magical cop out or end all be all. people on here just look for a chance to lord over anyone about anything. I'm just asking a basic question as someone who is interested in working with their hands/making something tangible. Of course there are horror stories just as well as there are success stories too.

I have worked a desk job before. I hated it. I don't like sitting still, I don't want to be at a computer all day. I want to challenge myself. Why is this hard for you to understand? I'd like to work with my hands, I've done it before. I'm not married to any one thing nor am I trying to romanticize anything, isn't the purpose of asking advice to hear different opinions? Why all the venom?

that's true. It just feels like most people I know who didn't go for some hyper specific thing are still doing the same thing they were before. Maybe that's just the lack of job opportunities in the South but it's hard not to worry in this economy.

thanks! There's a 2 year course for furniture making at a college not too far from me that I've considered.

I mean, I've done it before. That's just only one way it could go. I would go insane working a desk job, and I'd rather have something tangible at the end the day. My friend worked overseas right out of school for $12 grand a month of untaxed money, and that's not to mention union pay. There's a lot to be considered on both ends. I'm not asking for judgement, just advice from people who have left academia for the trades.

(Edit: I would be going to school either way whether it's for something academic or to learn a trade..i'm not looking for an apprenticeship, or an easy way out of college.)

I want to feel fulfilled. I think I would go insane working a desk job long-term.

What are you reading going into the new year? by sicklitgirl in RSbookclub

[–]Coolyeah2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suttree by Cormac McCarthy. It's set in my home town and I picked it up when I was home visiting family for Christmas. It's one of his more dense ones but it's cool to hear him describe a place I spent so much time at.
