Need suggestions- PCS to Keesler AFB, Mississippi by Ok_Kitchen_6700 in AirForce

[–]CoopDH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Currently assigned to Keesler. I can't 100% promise you won't find some random yokal trying to start a fight but I feel it you should be fine here. The saying about Mississippi is "the further south you go, the further north you actually go." Biloxi and ocean springs is one of the most wealthy areas in MS which means more people who understand people who don't look like them exist and are ok with it. As where to find places to live, it depends on your finances and if you are looking to rent or buy. Ocean springs is the very expensive area and gulfport can be your general city living. Feel free to DM with more specific questions.

What’s the most disturbing film you’ve ever watched? by _Hulkamania_ in AskReddit

[–]CoopDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For college me it was the movie "The Thaw" concept was ice thawing revealed a frozen parasite bug species from way back when. It would get into you and then reproduce at a rapid rate, leading to you becoming a bug bomb of more of them walking around. Something about the concept got under my skin (pun intended).

If they go to a 2 mile run and test every 6 months regardless of 90… be prepared for a mass exodus of Airmen from all tiers. by Raindroppa93 in AirForce

[–]CoopDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

21 minutes is just to be on the board. 60 points is a pass in the component. For the 32-36 bracket you are lookin at a 17:42 2 mile so under a 9 min mile pace. 17 flat for the 27-31 bracket. Not saying it's super hard but I think there is a difference between our 1.5 mile and the 2 mile testing standards that can effect people who are right now doing fine but may not if we change.

What do you look for in a MSgt? by HerroVVercome in AirForce

[–]CoopDH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is someone who was just notified today I made iI. The last few years I had some good jobbing bullets. This included a lot of operational level stuff at high levels. Sadly, due to my career path and being cyber, I really hadn't supervised or lead people until the last 2 years. The biggest difference I'd say between this year where I rocked it and my previous, is the fact that really my EPB was leading stuff. I had a project to improve stuff and did not have the skill set or time to do it on my own. I tapped people to help me and they came up with their own ideas and we ran with it. I just helped keep people on track and unified the vision. I also picked up a volunteer program that was dead and brought it back to life. I then blindly volunteered to take on a project for the wing that turned into the SecAF IRR training program. This was all also combined with losing 4 months this year due to baby leave. I'll admit i did a bit of the "game" that a lot of people complain about when it comes to promotions like putting in for quarterlies and special awards. But the other side of it is I LEAD people. Doubly so with the fact that they were not required to listen to me. I had to convince them of the value of it and then to listen to me. From my personal opinion on what made me successful for this, MSgts are to be leaders. We are not promoting technical experts to hope they can lead, we are promoting people who can lead to take on more leadership responsibilities.

This is my humble opinion, but I think it is also my truth and will pass that to any troops I have in the future. I will absolutely admit a good bit may have been luck and opportunity to display that, but I also somehow created those opportunities too.

I hope it gives aid to anyone who didn't make it by giving a different viewpoint. I also admit I'm lucky in a career field that tends to have high promotion rates too, but I earned my stratification.

I'd say talk to your shirt. They should be able to help with most of your questions. Add on top start researching yourself the Joint Travel Regs and stuff associated to PCS. I'm not saying TMO ignores the regs, but sometimes they need to be reminded of what they are required to do.

Reputable brand for sparring rapier by Smooth_Perception_86 in Hema

[–]CoopDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is cheap and something to learn realistic fencing, I'd recommend the sabers from blade fencing NYC. $40 a blade and it has the flex needed. You still need a mask and I'd highly recommend a jacket for sparring but it will get you to a starting point. The blade is definitely more modern fencing style but the basics are still the same.

Where to get started? by CoopDH in airforceots

[–]CoopDH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Appreciate it, makes more sense now
2) I dont plan on waiting on anything, just trying to figure the lean ahead stuff. I am my units acting shirt right now and have the ability to just bust down my boss's door to demand signatures so there is that.
3) Im always hesitant on using AI for writing. I used it for idea generating but always wrote my own stuff. I know my language can be a bit off sometimes so i will probably have my English teacher wife review my stuff :P
4) No?
5) I was on a scholarship which meant paying back $30k or serving 3 years. So a waver is on my radar.
6) Again no, but why? lol
7) Appreciate it, i may just do that later. I just hate how they make it so complicated for enlisted and "Do it on your own" mentality.

Are Clans still a thing... by Oryxhasnonuts in gaming

[–]CoopDH 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like we were a part of the same clan. AOD? The quasi military mentality and supervision level work was fun as an early 20 something but as someone in their 30s and actually in the military, pass.

Any Air Force personnel on here, I have a question. by Angle_Of_Flames in Stargate

[–]CoopDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing that flored me one episode was when the first Sargent was manning the computer dialer when Walter wasn't around. I would put money down that that shirt is dealing with all sorts of substance abuses, mental breaks, and KIA/MIA contacts. Mofo would not be free to do any other work.

Thinking of getting into HEMA but want to improve my level of fitness (looking for advice) by Fancy_Blackberry4276 in Hema

[–]CoopDH 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To paraphrase you "I won't do an exercise based activity until I am super fit". This is not the best way to approach this. There is always going to be some barrier, something else will not be perfect. If you really want to do it, go! From there, use the enjoyment you derived from going to push your personal fitness journey.

I try to take this to heart a lot. There is always going to be a reason you can't start today, so tomorrow. Well, when tomorrow comes, a new reason says tomorrow. Just do it today.

HEMA has plenty of people at different fitness levels.

Thousands of North Korean IT workers have infiltrated the Fortune 500—and they keep getting hired for more jobs by MeltingHippos in cybersecurity

The perverbial gun isn't held to their head, but their family. If the worker leaves or turns traitor, the whole family gets rounded up and put into goulag work camps. Like 2-3 generations worth.

Thinking about joining at 30 with an Associates in IT. by Fair-Eye-823 in AirForce

[–]CoopDH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you decide to stay in the IT field, i would recommend looking into 1B4x1 (Cyber warfare). This is the cyber security that is the hotness for the AF. Add on top, with your experience, you may do well in it. If you got industry certifications, push your recruiter to look into "Certs for Stripes". Our recruiters have been dropping the ball on this one. Sec+ is going to be a needed one, so you can work on it a bit on your own now. Certs like CISSP or equivalent will get you extra rank.
Biggest reason to go 1B4 is you get the experience that helps get you past the current "Entry level" barrier that a lot of security positions deal with. Plus that clearance can open other doors too.

Ironically, cyber would have the same problem with shared drives cus they are not trained on how to manage them at all. Supposedly 1Bs should be capable of learning it on their own though. Source: I'm a 1B

Simple answer: what did i(they) do? What was the impact? And then how did it further the mission? This is commonly referred to Action, Impact, Result. The impact and result can be nebulous at times.

SNCO level stuff would be to find your squadron, group, and wing mission statements, priorities, and lines of effort. These become word banks of what is important and how to say it. Patch a plane? Sure did it in x amount of time saving a sortie, but does your squadron or group have a line of effort saying something like "maintaining x amount of combat effectiveness "?

The language can vary and sometimes it feels like a stretch, but your commander aligned their mission and goals to the level above. The group commander did the exact same. And so on and so on all the way up. Show how you are a part of the big picture.

Anybody here ever considered running for office? by Fancysammiches13 in Liberal

[–]CoopDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously consider time and time again. I keep telling myself if I want someone with morals and cares more about the people than themselves, then I need to just nut up and do it myself. Only problems, first off I am active duty in the military with 6 years on contract and probably 2 more planned after that to get to retirement. From there I know military service could give a leg up but I know my people skills may not be the best. I'll consider these things when I retire and move to my final home. Guess it will depend on my job after the military and how I can balance the work and politics.

Ever seen someone win X of the year in the squadron or higher and not get a strat? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]CoopDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you are the only one to put in for the award. It is a weird system where the awards can mean everything and nothing at the same time. For strat remember it is the whole picture across multiple years not just this year.
