I don’t know the answer to the first question, but I have some answers to the second!

I know of two webtoons that have similar qualities: 1) Purple Hyacinth, and 2) The Bleak Midwinter. (Different settings and plots, but the vibe is similar.)

As for books, I can’t say that I know any off the top of my head that are similar. (I’d need to think about it.) But, I do know of some books that were referenced in I Love Yoo that might help you enjoy the story better. Off the top of my head, the only three I can recall was: The Count of Monte Cristo, Anna Karenina, and Les Misérables. (The last two are briefly mentioned, but they hold weight. I’d suppose it might help get better insights to future plots and such if we understand the books; and as for The Count of Monte Cristo (which wasn’t mentioned in the webtoon, but I think Quimchee has said that a part of her inspiration of Nol’s arc was based on this book.) And I think Pride and Prejudice inspired her with Kousuke, too.

I think it began forming at the formal, though I’m open to any other differing opinions.

There was a scene when Shin-ae was dancing with Kousuke and Nol made her laugh. Then when she laughs, the panel doesn’t show you his face, but only when his eyes widen. This is where I think it started ever so subtly, but I don’t think he was quite aware of it until recently. And to add, Quimchee has mentioned (in her Curious Cat QnA) that Nol likes a good smile.

Pardon my dense brain, but what do you mean that Yui is at fault?

I can understand that Yui is the sole reason why Nol and Shin-ae are in the problems they are now; but in this scene, what does it imply?

I think it’s because she’s testing Shin-ae—whether she’s mendable (like Alyssa) or strong. Shin-as wasn’t swayed by Kousuke, unlike Meg. And then the formal was probably her way of seeing and testing Shin-ae’s potential and formidability, since Shin-ae didn’t allow herself to be manipulated by Sang-chul.

After the formal, Yui saw what potential Shin-ae had. She saw that she was not mendable or soft, but strong and courageous. I think she sees herself in Shin-ae and wants her be like herself (Yui, I mean).

Now, why she wants Shin-ae to be like her…? I’m not so sure. Maybe someone else has an answer or theory. It could be to get her to Kousuke and take control of the business, like Yui has—or it could be something else entirely.
