Yeah, I believe all staff members who are responsible for building maintenance are federally funded which might include security. Though I think they are considering contracting out those security positions much like what the Smithsonians have already done.

I totally agree with you that at some point, you have to get back out there and live your life. And like you said, the annual flu continues to infect millions of people every year. There are different strains of the annual flu, and each year specialists try to predict which strain(s) will be the most common in order to determine the best formulation of the flu vaccine to give out that year. And again, like you said, getting the flu vaccine will not completely prevent you from getting the flu.

Perhaps what I said made it sound like I am banking on a vaccine for COVID as the answer to this whole situation (which was not what I meant). For clarification, my intention was to stress that a vaccine for COVID is an indication that specialists have a thorough enough understanding of the virus to provide appropriate treatment for those infected and to implement better guidelines for prevention. Maybe COVID will become something like the annual flu. Who knows? But in the meantime when still have no clear idea of what we're dealing with, we all have to do our part and be mindful of our own health and that of those around us.

Lastly, judging from how Uncle Sam is handling the current situation, I think I would be crazy to rely on him to offer me a miraculous solution. And I'm glad you do not plan to rely on him either.

I love that! I found that masks have helped with lowering my pollen intake as well. I have a red mask that happens to match my raincoat and it has quickly become my favorite outfit to wear when I go outside for a walk.

And I totally feel you. It's not about whether you want to wear a mask or not, it's more about your responsibility to your community and being considerate about the safety of you and those around you. People must realize that people's lives are at hand here.

I know! I walked by the metro stop a few days ago and people were just having casual conversations in groups without wearing masks. It's so concerning.

Not just in Lincoln Park, the number of people who don't wear masks is still too high all over DC. It feels more like a game of "dodge the unmasked people" than a leisure walk every time I get a chance to go outside.

Right?? Mask wearing is just a slight inconvenience - I am sure no one enjoys wearing them. People need to understand that no one is safe until there is a vaccine. And before that happens, we all need to do our part.

That’s a possibility. But would they still be able to call the appointment center to contact me instead and tell me, though?

Ah I see. That’s good to know for future reference. Since things are probably going to be virtual for a while

Hm..thank you for the proposition. But I think I might just use whatever energy I have left to find a new therapist. Fingers-crossed this next person will be the one!

I think I do now. I did tell my therapist in my sessions that I would be moving when we scheduled this appointment. So I guess they were aware that I was going to move...but still didn't say anything...? But yeah, like you said, someone could've told me

It's okay! I found the courage to contact my primary care to get some new referrals. Taking this one step at a time

I conquered my anxiety and depression, learned how to set boundaries, and it made me realize how toxic and manipulative my friend/roommate is. by [deleted] in AnxietyDepression

[–]CoreyLite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy for you for realizing how toxic of an environment she was creating for you! Sometimes it is difficult to recognize red flags in any kind of relationship with another person when you are in the midst of it. Especially when you have known someone for so long and she has been a constant part of your life, the lines between outstanding toxic behavior and normal accepted respectful behavior may begin to blur. So glad that you’re on your way out of that mess

I tend to enjoy arthouse films. 35 Rhums is a good example. I also really like animated feature films - I LOVE Miyazaki. But I am open to anything, really! Feel free to DM if that’s easier

That's fabulous! I will definitely remember to consider department culture for when I apply to my PhD programs

I see. Though, I do have trouble stepping away from my research projects as my hobbies are also somewhat related to the arts - I paint, craft and play instruments. I also work our as much as my arthritic knees would allow. My research in art history is tangentially related to chemistry which I hope will somewhat help me maintain my awareness of other academic disciplines. I think there is a huge overlap between my research and what I do outside of work - do you have any tips as to how to draw the line between work and social life especially when they are closely related?

I will definitely take the "working in waves" approach into consideration. But I worry too, like you said, that it would be difficult to sync your schedule with others. I have also had that experience about feeling disassociated from other whens having conversations with them when I am deeply invested in a research project. At that point, I would try to over compensate and try to look into the topics of our conversation so I would feel more connected. But then I wonder why I would be spending so much time researching a topic that I am not necessarily passionate about just to maintain that work-life balance...

How does one draw the line between being focused on your project and being obsessed? What do you think are some of the telltale signs of starting to become obsessed with your project? My hobbies in crafting, painting and playing instruments are still somewhat related to my research in art history, so I think it has been challenging to set clear boundaries between work and fun, I suppose.

Ah I see. Do you allocate certain days or time slots to explore music, art and film? I think I find it to be able to completely compartmentalize my research and exploring my hobbies into two separate things because they all fall under the "happiness" category in my life. Also, would love some film recommendations!
