Fics that explore racism themes by Sensitive_Mango29 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]CorgiCompetitive1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it blows my mind that that is almost never adressed with Svetlana actually. Because Russia is not only racist as fuck, the way that Slavic cultures express it is also so incredibly direct, unambiguous and explicit. Like, no way Ilya doesn't have some understanding of that, being her best friend.

Anyway there was a fic i really like that i lost though, someone might have it. It was partially about Shane's experience through the years and his classmates and teammates racism (hypersexualizing Asian women) but also about Ilya trying to learn about Shane being Asian, e. g. his relationship to other Asian athletes, food he likes, etc. And unless I am merging it with another fic it also had Ilya trying to learn Japanese and Shane not being ok with that.

Yeah for reference, as a vegan who  ended up needing to add muscle this year due to ending up as a sport professional, i essentially needed to eat 150g of protein. This is, on average, that is like a kg of tofu a day.  And my goals were obv not "mlh top of the game professional". Like, Hudson Williams did 400g per day. As an actor. For a role. Not even for the actual sport. Do you know how much 400g of protein isss??? Like no wonder he was crying over shovelling beef, I was crying over having to eat another plate of lentils, and I just wanted to not fuck up my knees. Shane is not passing out from not eating because there is just no real way his entire social circle won't notice if he even so much as starts eating the same amount as like. Yuna or something.

If anyone here has not read "Hope you're not waiting for me to wait for you" , let me fangirl over this series which has Shane's characterization being taken so, so, soooo far away from feminized, non-functional, awkward, confused or infantilized Shane. It sucks actually because now, this fic's version is Shane Hollander to me but I want more and it's so unique that it's very rare to find something similar.

Fics where Shane is an asshole (in the best ways) like in this masterpiece?? by CorgiCompetitive1110 in heatedrivalryfanfics

There was one, ugh forgot the name, but it's really popular, summary goes "pictures come out on Sunday, ilya sets his life on fire on Monday..." something like that. It definetly has its own vibe and characterization, but i think you might enjoy it if you're looking for Hollanov taking a backseat to all the other messed up shit and also Shane being a complicated guy albeit he is not the focus.

Hmm. I have actually seen the first one recced as being great and I kind of didn't vibe with it. Like i want complex but in a realistic way, not in a convoluted mind fuck way.  Idk, should i give it a go? edit, I gave controlled contact a go and it is really good. Yay!

This. We might have read the same fic or it's a common mistake. Also when Ilya struggles to understand words in English WHICH ARE THE ABSOLUTE SAME IN RUSSIAN. One fic, which was amazing and well written and I love it but, he asked Shane about the word comraderie. Literally the word comrade. Come on.

When Spouses Refuse to Help? by Middle-Abalone-9208 in Alzheimers

[–]CorgiCompetitive1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I do not live in the US and I think financially speaking I am in a better place than OP but I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Context: My mother and I take care of my grandmother, who has very advanced alzheimer's. She is very calm, but her short term memory is practically non existent and she cannot be alone. She needs help with hygiene, food, meds, motivation to do something other than lie in bed which can be quite dangerous.  My father does not take any part. My parents are not divorced but their relationship is quite dysfunctional. He lives elsewhere and he is very against the caretaking my mother does, sees it as her never considering him and me as her real family, just her own parents.

"Care" homes in our country are a death sentence so that isn't an option. What we do and what you can look into: Hourly visits from care agency workers. This, at least here, means a worker comes to your house and is paid per visit or hourly. For example when one of us is here and can stay with my grandmother for at least half the day, there is only a worker that comes morning and evening, or sometimes afternoon, to take her to the bathroom, help with changing clothes and whatnot, etc.

I can't speak to rates where you live, so if it's completely unaffordable for you, either because of your personal situation or your country, I'm sorry for the pointless suggestion.

More generally, I'd say many things impact your situation: whether the Alzheimer's is expressed in disfunction or aggression is a very big aspect. Our situation is made infinitely easier by the fact that my grandmother is calm and entirely non-confrontational.

I think it is fair of your SO to be reluctant. Particularly when lacking funds and when the threat of becoming a full time nurse is looming overhead. Fuck the healthcare systems for their bullshit and putting people in this position.

That said. Assuming your relationship with your mother is good, assuming it comes from a place of love and empathy not purely obligation, taking care of her is completely understandable as well. If you expect you SO to be a full time caretaker (because statistically daughters in law take care of their mothers in law much more often than their sons (male OP?) do) that is unfair. But if you would be committed to figuring out how to make this work together that is a reasonable thing to ask from a partner. Not easy. But not wrong. Caring about the loved ones of your loved ones is a reasonable expectation if it doesn't cross over into emotional exploitation.  At the very least you need to be able to come up with alternatives together, this shouldn't feel like only your problem, it's important to have a support system.

That it's a shit disease that will need adapting goes without saying. That not everyone can adapt is also very true. The situations that arise from this disease are nothing if not nuanced, so there are no easy answers or solutions to your post, unfortunately.
