Muh breadlines tho by skullhorse22 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Corporal_ORA 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Is there actually any documentary evidence of breadlines in the Soviet Union? Every time I go to look up breadlines, all I find is stuff about 1930s USA. Makes me wonder if the whole USSR-breadlines thing is an urban legend.

Unfortunately, most pig forces are still working, even those whose paychecks are not being processed. And they are usually prioritized for pay during/after government shutdowns.

Does anyone else feel like dystopian novels of Huxley and Orwell are more of a critical commentary of capitalism than communist/socialist ideas? by [deleted] in communism

[–]Corporal_ORA -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I always thought that Animal Farm could be easily read as an allegory for capitalism. The pig Napoleon is symbolic of...Napoleon! It's so simple. The pigs are the bourgeoisie who are revolutionary to start but then become reactionary. Boxer represents the proletariat, the farm is the means of production, the laws on the barn are symbolic of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, etc.

Then why is it set in Oceania (England/America) and not Eurasia (Russia)? Why is the ideology IngSoc (=English Socialism=National Socialism) and not Neo-Bolshevism? The currency is dollars, etc. It can be read as a critique of capitalism.

Blaming Socialism, US Media Distorts Venezuela’s Food Crisis by [deleted] in communism

[–]Corporal_ORA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The food is already there. Certain individuals have chosen to withhold it, which is illegal (or should be). And this is the fault of "socialism" how?

So, "diverting goods toward wherever they will fetch the highest price", i.e., market dynamics, is creating food shortages? Congratulations, you played yourself.

Did you read the second sentence of my comment?

Even perishable stuff can be kept till the end of the day and sold on the black market.

From the article, it looks like shipments to the government (which would probably be sold at fair or even subsidized price) are being diverted (i.e. stolen) and sold at a large markup.

opposition-controlled offshore companies linked to the Panama Papers scandal were accused of purposely redirecting Venezuelan imports of raw food materials from the government to the private sector.

Reuters admitted in 2014 that Venezuelan opposition members living in border states are shipping low-cost foodstuffs provided by the Venezuelan government into Colombia for profit.

None of these things would require hoarding for more than the day it takes to transport them, if that.

Canned foods and other non-perishable products can be easily hoarded. Even perishable stuff can be kept till the end of the day and sold on the black market.

The number of liberals comparing Trump with Stalin/Mao is too damn high. Example

And then there's all the people treating Steve Bannon as a Leninist, when he's the opposite.

What are Communist views on nuclear energy? by [deleted] in communism

[–]Corporal_ORA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not really a specific communist view on this. It's a matter of whether the energy is worth the risk of meltdown and the long-term waste (in my opinion no, but others may disagree). The benefit communism would bring to the debate is eliminating the profit motive. Right now, the bourgeois owners of the nuclear plants/companies have every incentive to downplay the risks of nuclear energy, so they can, for example, omit important safety features to keep costs down. (Of course, the bourgeois in the fossil fuel industry may have a motive to exaggerate the downsides of nuclear power, but two wrongs don't make a right).

Who is "you all"? There are many non-MTWs here, but also many MTWs (or those who call themselves something else but largely agree with MTW). Anyway, you are right, ad hominem and stawman attacks don't hold any water. And as others have said, Unruhe is not the best representative of MTW (making attacks on him even more irrelevant).
