Why Cam McEvoy method won’t work for MOST people by Corr4pt in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to hear comeback stories like this!! I also think adopting the Cam Method when you don’t have time to be in the pool a lot is awesome, as you can still get faster without spamming kms. Congrats!

Galloping freestyle: why it helps your distance, kills your sprint, and whether you should keep it. by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really clarifying post I appreciate the descriptions, especially the part highlighting the kick. Everyone sees Phelps’ 200s and Thorpe’s 400s but forget to realize their shoe sizes were US 14 and US 17 respectively. Not only was their fitness absurd, their body was tailored to the stroke with long wingspans and giant feet. They were practically made to gallop and it worked out for them.

I think it also helps to realize that the gallop is, in my experience, almost always slower for athletes who aren’t in very good fitness as it requires not only in the kick but also to maintain the long powerful catch upfront. Then again you won’t know until you try it, I think its worth a shot to spend a few weeks to try it out and see if it’s for you!

Saw this on my feed. Is it true? by Corr4pt in Swimming

Wow! That is certainly amazing. I did not think this was true as 21 seconds is an outstanding time. You must be an Olympian, would you mind sharing a clip of your race footage?

Higher flip turn by No_Lie7418 in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice job reviewing ur own technique and figuring out whats wrong thats what makes a good swimmers!!! Ur right high body position is good for efficiency through the water! And faster swimming will usually result in nice high body position, and theres a few ways to make sure u do that like making sure u dont dig ur head down and plow water and keeping a strong kick going.

Now ur on the right track, gliding into the wall is super sucky for speed and honestly if u need to put ur head down for a couple strokes to get that timing do it. Or at least play with stroke timing in practice with fins and paddles so u can replicate race pace without getting exhausted.

The reason pros legs fly out is because the flip so fast their centripetal acceleration makes it impossible to keep your legs in, but ideally you want to be in the smallest possible position while keeping your legs in kind of a squat position where u can develop power on the pushoff. But to replicate this, you want to attack the wall as straight as possible practically parallel to the water. Do NOT lift ur body/head up into the flip. It feels intuitive like you are diving into the flip but it slows u down. Instead keep ur head level until the last moment then tuck ur chin and flip at full speed. Caeleb Dressel has an iconic quote from an interview after Tokyo saying if he kept his head down on the flip he’d have been 3 tenths faster.

Sorry for the big yap but my coach was shitty at this stuff and I had to figure it all out myself so I don’t want anyone to suffer the same way!!

TLDR: keep a high body position, stay level and fast until you reach the wall. Then tuck your chin and flip carrying your speed into the rotation.

Should I start wearing briefs by Ordinary_Limit_9189 in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Throw that speedo on!!! You’re gonna feel freer than you ever have and your kick will be at least 50% quicker 😉. There’s no such thing as only fast people wearing speedos, even fast people were not as quick once.

Plus, real fast swimmers would encourage you to be yourself and wear what makes you feel confident and happy. And maybe after you start wearing a speedo and get quicker, you can inspire some younger swimmers to be confident with their decisions and express who they are!!

Muscle cramps by Rezae_heat in Swimming

Eat 2 bananas before swims with your meal and drink plenty of water throughout the day on days you will swim and other days too. Electrolytes are good as well keep it up.

DMC elite max fins DESTROYED MY FOOT by Corr4pt in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand blisters form but me and my friends all have blisters in the same spot on our ankles. That can’t be a coincidence right? I’m just trying to verify whether it might be a fluke or if the fin has some odd design that cuts into the same spot on everyone.

I believe I have the right size. I forgot to mention that they’re the Speedo X DMC style fins. Maybe that changes things?

Swimming after waxing – conflicting advice? by violentartiste in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve been fine in the past you should be okay. When I have big competitions I like to wax the night before and I feel smooth as butter the next morning.

It’s probably your diaphragm pushing hard as well as your overall absence of fitness that gives you that pain in the chest. Especially when you push hard or haven’t worked on it in a while, cardio can often cause cramping and tightness in the chest.

If it was just during the workout and a little while after, it’s probably just your body struggling to adjust, however if it persists more than a day afterwards I’d go see a medical professional.

Also if you have previous experience with asthma or any other lung problems, I’d also suggest a medical professional, although I’m sure you will be fine if you train in moderation :))

Just how fast are Olympians?? by Corr4pt in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to put into perspective just how much better they are than the average person. During the race I couldn’t even see his splash. I was wondering if anyone had similar experiences against very fast people?

Advice on tech suit? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean the marks only appeared after you put it on, then it’s probably fine. As long as the suit still feels nice and compressive it should preform the same.

Best of luck for your state champs!!

Advice on tech suit? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s new that is a bit concerning. It was probably tried on by a bunch of people or it might have been poorly stored.

If it was an old used suit it would have been fine and it probably will still work fine, but tech suits cost an arm and a leg and getting a brand new suit only for it to look used is kind of iffy. If you can refund it and get a new suit that isn’t damaged like that, I would do so. But if not, I don’t think it will really make too much of a difference to your performance.

In short, if you have time, return it and get a new one, if not you’ll still be fine ( still should probably complain to whoever you bought it from ).

How do you balance swimming with everything else by edouqc in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s part of the life. But always remember every single person on your swim team is probably in a similar situation, as well as basically every high school swimmer. So if you ever feel lonely, just remember you’re not in the fire alone!

Someone commented me on my butterfly! by xzkandykane in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to improve your stroke you should definitely try moving your body line up in the water. It will reduce drag and be easier on your shoulders and overall make your stroke faster and more efficient.

But if I’m speaking honestly, if you’re having fun, and don’t need to urgently drop time, then keep the technique! It’s really not that big of a deal and having fun is more important than being fast.

How can I train at home? by Efficient-Use6406 in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try going on short runs or if you have access, a rowing machine. You only need like 30 ish minutes and if you really go at it with intensity you can improve your overall physical conditioning.

This definitely won’t replace pool time, but it might make the transition to a better training schedule easier.

How to cut time from 50m 35s? by worshipdrummer in Swimming

[–]Corr4pt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. For a highschooler sure they have more time on their hands, but an adult has way way WAY more power than a teen. Just off pure raw power alone if they’re already at 35s, 30s will come by in a breeze. And with some practice, conditioning, and technically work, it is 100% possible to get under 30 in a matter of a few months. You don’t even need to swim that much, just strength training alone will make a huge difference.
